Dr. Lonnie Smith has spent his life studying, playing, and expanding the sounds of the celebrated Hammond B-3 organ for over 50 years. He first received “the 425 lb. beast” in exchange for nothing more than hauling the instrument out of the shop. He has been recognized as a top musician since 1969, when Downbeat magazine declared him “Top Organist of 1969,” and has continued to receive praise, respect, and other awards, including being named “Organ Keyboardist of the Year” three consecutive years by The Jazz Journalist Association from 2003-05.
He returns to Jazz at the Bistro this year for a 4-night stay, February 1-4, with two sets nightly. He’s joined by guitarist, Jonathan Kreisberg, and drummer, Jamire Williams. Together, they form a trio that demonstrates precision and range, as well as emotive facial expressions. The show tactfully built in intensity with a cascade of peaks and drops until the crowd rocked in their seats. Even with extremely high expectations from a master of his trade, Dr. Lonnie Smith couldn’t fail to impress, and many audience members were already making plans to return later in the week.
