It's not an unknown story in popular music. Band records its best record. Band breaks up. Album disappears.

The story of the Rockhouse Ramblers, once the foremost hard country band in St. Louis, and their "lost album," has a happier ending. Though the band dissolved five years ago, the players have remained friends and performed together in a variety of other settings (notably Colonel Ford and Diesel Island). And yet their swan song, Lies, and Damn Lies, hasn't seen the light of day until now.

Recorded in 2004, the record swings, shuffles, rocks and twangs just as traditional country, rockabilly and hillbilly boogie should. But the sound is as rich, detailed and punchy as modern country, bringing to mind the best work of the Mavericks, the Derailers or Bill Kirchen. The five musicians -- lead guitarists John Horton and Gary Hunt, rhythm guitarist Kip Loui, bassist Dade Farrar and drummer Danny Kathriner -- have a great feel for deceptively simple country rhythms and an underrated vocal chemistry as well. And song for song, Lies, and Damn Lies is their strongest record, even if it turns out to be their last.

The band will be having a CD release party (and KDHX benefit) at the Duck Room tonight, August 13. Brian Henneman opens at 9 p.m. Don't miss it.
