In a Frank Capra-like twist, a whole bunch of entries came in today at the last second, bursting with creativity, creepy graffiti imagery, inside jokes, heart-on-sleeve sentiment, weird symbols, lyrics, unicorns, a "69, dude!" reference and just a smidge of Napolean Dynamite—exactly what I was looking for in a study hall-esque, high school notebook drawing.
And while only three winners were picked, everyone who entered is getting some KDHX swag because you are awesomely, awesomely cool. If I were to sign your Yearbook at the end of the year, I'd write "Don't ever change. Remember that Bright Eyes contest? Good times lol. See you next Fall —Chris "The Body" Ward."
You can see all the entries in the gallery below, but congrats especially to Allison, Rachel and Nick! For their Tiger Beat giddiness, wicked drawing of Bonnie Tyler, and understated but kind of beautiful "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" notebook, respectively, they're all going to the show. I mean, jeez...those shoulder pads on Bonnie Tyler, the "Total Eclipse of the Heart/Bright Eyes" reference...that's tough to beat.
And though it wasn't a pre-requisite, Nick adds this note: "I imagined myself carrying around the album "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" through school just dying to listen to it at lunch time and getting stuck in Study Hall... this is my little attempt to bring me back to the days of my first real girlfriend who turned me into a Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes fan. Like most first 'Loves,' she ripped out my heart, leaving me with a few good memories, a wider spectrum of musical tastes, a hard earned lesson in love and life, and of course, no more virginity."
You can see why these were all incredibly hard for our staff to pick between. I mean, geez, go see for yourself...
Thank you everyone who entered, and feel free to discuss all the entries with me civilly and/or verbally assault me in the comments section!
