This weekend doesn't offer many shows that pique my interest, but the few that do are quite appealing.

Friday, May 9

Dock Ellis Band / Bubbahoney / Rodeo Soul
Plush (3224 Locust)
8 p.m. door/9 p.m. start; $7 (18+ only)

Classic country-styled originals -- full of funny lyrics -- from Dock Ellis Band.

A blend of country, folk and rock from Bubbahoney.

Twang-infused rock from Rodeo Soul.

Colonel Ford
Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest)
9 p.m. start; free (all ages; minors writing an essay must be with an adult)

Vintage-styled honky-tonk and country sounds from the skilled veterans of Colonel Ford.

Saturday, May 10

Blues guitarist Samantha Fish (Kansas City, Missouri) and band perform at the Gramophone (4243 Manchester).

Door at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m., with a $12 advance/15 door cover (18+ only).

-----

Amy LaVere / Rod Picott
Off Broadway (3509 Lemp)
8 p.m. door/9 p.m. start; $10 (+3 20-under; all ages, but 17-under must be adult-accompanied)

Amy LaVere (Memphis, Tennessee) smoothly blends all the sounds her hometown is famous for in her music. Able to transition among styles with a sensual vocal delivery, she strikes me as akin to a female Chris Isaak.

Rod Picott (Nashville, Tennessee) is a singer-songwriter whose songs have been covered by some impressive artists.

Sunday, May 11

Blasters / Piñata Protest
Off Broadway (3509 Lemp)
7:30 p.m. door/8 p.m. start; $15 advance/18 door (+3 20-under; all ages, but 17-under must be adult-accompanied)

All the things that make roots-based American music great coalesce in the form of the Blasters (Downey, California).

A blend of punk energy with traditional Mexican sounds from Piñata Protest (San Antonio).

Dick Caveat
