"Burn Your Fire for No Witness" contains eleven originals ready to break you down and build you back up again in under 50 minutes. Angel Olsen finds comfort in a new relationship with a different label along with constant touring in support of the record.
Record label, release date and producer: Jagjaguwar Records released "Burn Your Fire for No Witness" on February 18, 2014; it was produced by John Congleton.
RIYL: Ruby Fray, Real Estate and Bill Callahan.
Hometown: St. Louis, Mo.
Standout tracks: The kick drum heavy track "Forgive/Forgotten" is supported with a little tinge of garage rock to help ease the pain of abandonment. Goosebumps instantly arise before "White Fire" even hits the ear drums. Sometimes all you need is a guitar to complement your vulnerability. By the time you reach the barebones and minimal "Enemy," you just want to give her a giant hug.
The artist: A 16-year-old Angel Olsen began performing in coffee shops and other intimate spaces. After years of dedication, a migration to the Second City and stints with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, she has gone from solo to trio. Her sophomore release "Burn Your Fire for No Witness" has attracted favorable attention from media outlets NPR, Pitchfork and Stereogum.
Play it while: Entering the recovery process from a failed relationship.
What the critics say: "Olsen is not the broken voice healing on this brilliant album. It is the voice itself, in its unique power and beauty, in the careful words it shapes and sharpens, that does the breaking, the severing, the leaving behind." Matthew Fiander, PopMatters.
In St. Louis: Angel Olsen will perform at Off Broadway on April 27, 2014.
