Charting the Music: Boys Noize, 'Out of the Black'

Written by Travis Dettmann

On "Out of the Black," the furious, space-age sounds of cyborg battles are all marshaled by one-man army Boys Noize.

"Out of the Black" is intensely hypnotic to say the least. The 12 tracks of Boys Noize's third effort are sure to conquer both a loyal fan base as well as new audiences.

88.1 KDHX Chart Position: #1 Electronic and #18 CMJ 30 for the week of November 27, 2012.

Record label, release date and producer: Boysnoize Records released "Out of the Black" on October 16, 2012; the album was produced by Boys Noize himself.

Can be heard on: Beep Beep Boop Boop with Kate and Juxtaposition with Rob Levy.

RIYL: Justice, Djedjotronic and Daft Punk.

Hometown: Hamburg, Germany.

About the artist: Alexander Ridha is the programmer behind Boys Noize. Born in 1982, Ridha began his complex craft as a minor. He's now headlining world tours, running Boysnoize Records, and is regarded as one of the world's finest DJs.

Standout tracks: The opening cut "What You Want" provides a flawless introduction with simulated robotic glitches. "Ich R U" faintly emulates the work of Daft Punk, Ridha's heroes.

About the guests: Berlin music producer Siriusmo shares his expertise on the tune "Conchord." Snoop Dogg can be heard on "Got It," proving he isn't bowing out anytime soon.

Did you know?: Boys Noize has remixed tracks by artists Bloc Party, Feist and Shiny Toy Guns just to name a few. Along with recently collaborating with Spank Rock and the Scissor Sisters on their current albums, Ridha is working with Sonny Moore of Skrillex on a new side project, Dog Blood.

Play it while: Sporting a fresh Skrillex haircut.

What the critics say: "Germany’s Alex Ridha coined the nu-electro sound currently storming US big-rooms back when it was hip, so it's a relief he doesn’t have eyes only for the dollar sign on his third album. As easy a focus as that would be, his resistance has paid dividends. While it might not exude the effervescent originality of 2007’s ‘Oi Oi Oi’ or the sparkling melody of 2009's "Power" -- he’s stuck with the basics of his formula on "Out Of The Black" -- his restraint here implies an air of confidence informing Ridha’s craft today." Adam Saville, Clash.
