Charting the music: Centro-matic, 'Candidate Waltz'

Charting the music: Centro-matic, 'Candidate Waltz'
Written by Joshua Edwards

Climbing up the KDHX charts is the latest release from Centro-Matic, Candidate Waltz. This stellar album showcases the band's genre-splitting talent.

Each track offers something new and could easily be considered single-worthy. When bundled together, however, these songs make Candidate Waltz one stand-out album.

Gritty, overdriven guitars carry many of the tracks, while bouncy piano and fluid synths fill in the sonic spaces. Each instrument’s sound has been tweaked to perfection, producing those spine-tickling tones that musicians can often only dream of. While there are driving, upbeat rhythms displaced throughout the album, it is also filled with mellow grooves suitable for a slow dance.

Vocally, Candidate Waltz is splendid. Backing vocals are intricately woven between verses and choruses, creating fascinating textures. My favorite song from the batch, "Estimate x 3," exemplifies this well. The hooks will, no doubt, stick with a listener. Check out Centro-Matic’s latest creations for yourself and you may just find them waltzing through your head all day.

On the KDHX Charts: #1 Americana and #2 CMJ for July 12, 2011.

This album can be heard on: Gold Soundz, the Space Parlour, Bittersweet Melody and Coin-Operated Radio.
