Formed in 1995, the Washington, D.C. duo of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton continue their genre-mashing journey with their latest release. Thievery Corporation stays true to their colors with Garza and Hilton carrying their political voice into Culture of Fear much like they have in past albums. Intertwined into their lounge style are elements of trip-hop, dub and reggae, with an acid jazz and experimental electronic backbone.
The album moves quickly from its electro-funk intro to the heart of Thievery Corporation with vocals from Mr. Lif on the album's title track. Journeying on, the album sways through a mellow club scene scattered thoroughly with seductive vocals from guests Shana Halligan, Lou Lou and more. "False Flag Dub," in contrast, navigates effortlessly into steel drums and reggae. Composed with the band's signature style, Culture of Fear delivers exactly what Thievery Corporation fans expect, an electric spark in a smokey lounge.
