On "Wig Out at Jagbags," Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks bring a fresh approach to alternative rock music with the eccentric songwriting for which the group's leader is well known.

Each track in this album can play well as a standalone, but that doesn't stop the songs from cooperating together to create an intricate and often sardonic approach to viewing the inevitable passage of time.

88.1 KDHX chart position: #2 Adult Album Alternative and #2 CMJ Top 30 for February 11, 2014.

Record label, release date and producer: "Wig Out at Jagbags" was released by Matador Records on January 7, 2014; it was produced by Remko Schouten.

Can be heard on: Rocket 88 with Darren Snow, Bittersweet Melody with Allen, and Coin-Operated Radio with Ryan.

RIYL: The Flaming Lips, except more down-to-earth; Pavement.

Hometown: Portland, Ore.

About the band: Stephen Malkmus is known mainly for his role as lead singer and guitarist of the lo-fi '90s band Pavement. He released his first solo album in 2001.

Notable lyrics: The wordplay in the track "Scattegories" -- "Pictionary mix and carry/Condoleezza's Rice/Scattered on the floor" -- will appeal to the observant listener.

Play it while: Taking a slow drive in the right lane of the highway on a quiet evening.

Did you know? When "Wig Out at Jagbags" was released, a restaurant in New York came out with a soft serve flavor inspired by the song "Cinnamon and Lesbians."

What the critics say: Pitchfork recently lauded a common theme throughout Malkmus' work, acknowledging that "At the heart of his music is still an inimitable bittersweetness -- the light shrug that follows the realization that in time all things will die and pass."
