At only 25 years of age, Troy Andrews, now known by his stage name Trombone Shorty, boasts an impressive body of work, including appearances on various tribute albums to legends like Fats Domino in addition to his solo releases. Since recording his first album at age sixteen he has branched out from his New Orleans jazz background, adding a funk-inspired quality to his adept trombone playing.
On "For True," Andrews continues to work with his backing band Orleans Avenue, known for a wide range of musical influences, including soul and rock. While remaining true to his distinct upbeat funk sound, the trombonist incorporates elements of blues, R&B, hip hop and Latin music within the album, a testament to the young musician's remarkable career. Beat-boxing and sampled vocals, African-style hand drumming, and gospel influenced harmonies give the release a diverse sound, while always staying deeply rooted in New Orleans musical traditions.
On the KDHX Charts: #1 on Jazz , and #5 Americana and #10 CMJ for September 27, 2011.
This album can be heard on: Stumble in the Dark, Memphis to Manchester, Howzit Bayou and the Rhythm Section.
