St. Louis' Heavy Anchor played host to a trio of local bands on Friday, November 2, showcasing some of the best local music of the year.

Opening act Middle Class Fashion worked through a set that included several new cuts, as the band is now in studio working on a follow-up to their well-received debut, "Girl Talk." A seven-member strong Karate Bikini -- including French horn and accordion -- was electric, as the band honked and thumped through a lengthy set.

In contrast to the big band before them, Aquitaine closed with a decidedly minimal sound, forced on them in part by the unfortunate absence of bassist and singer Will Hildebrandt. The remaining trio did their best to fill in for Will with a guns-blazing romp through tracks from their debut EP, "American Pulverizer, Pt. 1," before closing out by inviting a few friends on stage to cover songs by Oasis and R.E.M.
