Best known as a musician, particularly as an emcee with Jurassic 5 and as a founding member of Ozomatli, Chali has expanded beyond music and expressed himself as an actor and painter. His discography includes multiple albums with his groups in addition to countless features with a list of who’s who in the greater music scene. It’s highlighted by his prized production, 2009’s “Fish Outta Water,” his only full-length solo release to date.
The Fish and his trademark baritone flow headlined a show at 2720 Cherokee with his live band, The House of Vibe, which included keys, drums, an uncommon 7-string bass and a second emcee on a handful of songs. Chali proved to be a very animated character on stage, full of expression and dancing whenever he could. In addition, many of St. Louis’ best came out to support him on and off the stage. The opening acts included KDHX’s own DJ Needles (of Rawthentic) spinning a live set and Mathias with DJ Mahf warming up the microphone. The show didn’t end with the headliners, as Soundclash with 18andCounting and Black Spade closed out the show for the night owls. (Closing act not pictured.)
