Husband-wife duo Shovels & Rope opened for the much-anticipated Dawes show at Off Broadway Friday night.

Their performance was a study in true American roots music, a journey through heavy blues and reserved ballads.

Fresh off a trip to London and playing arenas, Dawes proclaimed appreciation for Off Broadway and its smaller capacity, saying they loved the intimacy. They were very down-to-earth guys, chatting with the audience and reminiscing about playing in the storm at last year's Loufest. It was a sweaty-good time.
