It seems missing the opening band is the mistake too many don't learn from. American Aquarium's songs are lyrical adventures -- stories of the road, barflies and debauchery fill the time between slow country melodies and rock 'n' roll riffs. They played a solid, soulful set that inspired raised glasses and the quickly-filling room to even quite down and listen.
After a long stage change, I made my way back to the front. The woman who swayed beside me had clearly found her spot very early in the evening; the mess of glasses in front of her was proof. As Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit made it to the stage, she jumped and let out a holler she'd been saving for this moment. The band kicked in and heads nodded in unison.
