It is safe to say that I was among the few first-timers to bear witness to the unique sounds of Menomena last night, as the vibe in the Firebird was electric with the kind of anticipation that comes from knowing a group's music well.

As I engaged several of those around me, I found that they were as eager and hopeful as I initially thought they might be. Menomena did not disappoint, either, as they poured out fascinating, rolling melodies.

New York trio Guards provided the warm-up, getting the crowd riled up in the process. As the opener, theirs was a job they took seriously, and with growling guitars and layered vocals, they succeeded masterfully.
