The Monophonics brought St. Louis a dose of soul and funk music last night at the Old Rock House.

Local favorites Big Brother Thunder and the Master Blasters opened the show, and they played a solid set to get the crowd warmed up.

Since the Monophonics' appearance here last May, I have been hoping the San Francisco group would swing back to town. Headlining the bill this time, and playing two-plus hours, I was more than happy to dance through the night with them as my guide. The group, although wonderful last time I saw them, has only improved with time. The bandmates have developed a wonderful dynamic with one another. They had an excellent set list, filled with favorites off their recent album, "In Your Brain," and a few covers, including a wonderful cover of "California Dreaming," which will be released on an EP this summer.
