Concert photos: Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds (with Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics) at the Gramophone, Wednesday, September 5

After shooting Gaelic Storm and the Old Rock House I rushed over the Gramophone to catch Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds.

Opening for Sparrow was a group I hadn't heard before, but as soon as I walked in the door I was floored at what I heard from Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics. Hearing is believing, because the voice that comes out of that body is otherworldly. Touring in support of their first LP, "It's About Time," this R&B rock group has soul!

The equally soulful Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, hailing from New York City, took the stage a little after 10 p.m. with some big shoes to fill. Undaunted, Sparrow broke right into her own version of R&B. Sparrow's voice is unique and has a raspy tone reminiscent of Janice Joplin. The high energy group got the crowd on their feet and dancing. Treated to repeated guitar, harmonica and saxophone solos, the crowd was well pleased. I had to leave the show early, so I missed out on my favorite tune, "Lasso," which was scheduled later in the set.
