Half Knots have been around for a while, flying so far and so long under the radar that the band's fan base is dominated by Chilean miners and KDHX DJs. It's an elite club, to be sure.
But the songs of Danny Kathriner, and the music made by wife Beth Kathriner, ex-Nadine multi-instrumentalist Todd Schnitzer, violin maestro Chris Peterson and friend Gary Baumstark deserve a wider hearing. Formed out of one of St. Louis' best alt-country outfits, Wagon, the group makes sumptuous, melodic folk pop, with a twangy heart and echoes of the finest acoustic tunesmiths, from Nick Drake to Mysteries of Life.
The band's third album is called New Perspectives, and on it Kathriner reflects on family, friendship and the future -- those things that we truly can't live without. It's a modest, graceful, warm collection of songs that gets better with every spin.
Half Knots will be having a CD release party on Saturday, October 16 at the Focal Point. It's a busy weekend for music in St. Louis; this show is highly recommended.
