If soul music is anything it's the expression of unfiltered feeling -- in melody and rhythm, theme and voice. Sometimes it's utterly primal, and sometimes, as in the music of Jesse Dee, it's finely, joyfully arranged.

With "On My Mind / In My Heart," Dee's second album and first for Alligator Records, the young Boston singer and songwriter tips his hat to the masters of soul -- Sam Cooke, James Carr, Smokey Robinson and Jackie Wilson -- while forging his own identity in exceptional songs and effortless, explosive horn and harmony charts.

It may be tempting to play spot the classic single with these 10 songs, but ultimately the history of soul and R&B recedes in the jazzy hook of the title track, the call-and-response of "Fussin' & Fightin'," the celeste-like chimes of "I Won't Forget About You," the smoldering ballad "Tell Me (Before It's Too Late"), the garage-soul frenzy of "Sweet Tooth" and the fresh, handicapping, dance-floor sing-along of "Stay Strong."

Ultimately, every track sounds alive and in-the-moment. Dee has made an old-school soul classic that sounds like it was made to bring honest feelings -- sometimes desperate, often hopeful -- to the here and now.

"On My Mind / In My Heart" will be released on February 26, 2013 on Alligator Records.
