Jason Robinson
The Mixtape

1. Kanye West - Yeezus (Def Jam)
It's still very new, but it's probably West's most challenging, most offensive, most in-your-face work yet. Angry, abrasive, vulgar and righteously indignant, like a rap version of Marilyn Manson.

2. Wavves - Afraid of Heights (Mom + Pop)
This record is pretty much rooted in the mid '90s, lyrically and sonically and there's nothing wrong with that. Nirvana fans, take note.

3. The Strokes - Comedown Machine (RCA)
A sonic gamble that mashes up about 11 different genres, keeps them united by Julian Casablanca's blurry croon and manages to still sound great.

4. Daft Punk - Random Access Memories (Columbia)
By reaching into the past for a more organic sound and production, these two French disco robots have made pretty much a perfect disco/downbeat album, complete with a nine-minute tribute to the genre's kingpin Giorgio Moroder -- featuring the man himself.

5. The Blind Eyes - World Record (Self-released)
These guys sure know how to hit the sweet spot, the rarified area where Elvis Costello, the Kinks and Cheap Trick all come together. Five songs just isn't long enough, but I guess it'll have to do.

6. The Front Bottoms - Talon Of The Hawk (Bar/None)
This New Jersey duo-turned-band have a knack for describing just what it is about your 20s that is both awesome and horrifying. Add to that the sharpest indie rock in the Elephant 6 collective vein and you've got a record that's built for repeat listens.

7. Tegan and Sara - Heartthrob (Vapor/Warner Bros)
Tegan and Sara Quinn are the Madonnas of the indie-rock world. At least that's what their latest reinvention tells me. Synth-pop-laced tracks do their best to dance the pain away, hiding dark lyrics under flourishes of '80s majesty.

8. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away (Bad Seed Ltd.)
At last it seems like Cave's various personas and ideas have coalesced. If you're a person who has always wondered what all the fuss is about, this would be a good place to start. It manages to be quiet, loud, tender and abrasive all at once and it's all the better for it.

9. Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin - Reverse Shark Attack (In the Red)
I'm new to the Ty Segall party, having only recently been handed a copy of TWINS, but this collaboration of fellow garage-rock upstart Mikal Cronin is blissful dissonance, from guitars to vocals. The off-hand sloppy yet controlled feel takes the exit marked garage rock, with a stop into Guided by Voices territory.

10. Alkaline Trio - My Shame Is True (Epitaph/Heart Skull)
Yet another stellar collection of dark pop-punk from these Chicago vets, their best record in about five years, and one of the better appropriations of the Ramones' lyrical simplicity in modern times.
