Despite its carefree nature, making a summer mix can be a harrowing task. Do you opt for of-the-moment pop jams or comfortable nostalgia? These are the questions that kept us cassette-dubbing youth up at night in summers past.

The modern age makes things at least a little easier. My show, Collector's Edition (Monday, 10:30 p.m. Central) is based around the live, in-studio performances captured at the Magnolia Avenue studios here at KDHX. And with the summer touring season in full swing, we've been busy cataloguing up-and-comers and old favorites these past few months.

Using this handy Soundcloud playlist, sample some of the best cuts from our summer sessions, from the bucolic pop of Rogue Wave to the ragged soul of Har Mar Superstar to the sweet-and-low twang of Caitlin Rose. There are a few local heroes on the mix (Jay Farrar, Pokey LaFarge, the Blind Eyes) and a good cross-section of national talent, all singing songs to fuel the rest of the season.

All together, these 13 songs could easily fill up Side A of a 90-minute Maxell cassette tape. We'll be filling in the other half, and more, as our summer sessions continue.
