Listen Live

John Uhlemann

There will be a concert of Hungarian folk music coming to St. Louis June 13th (a Thursday) at 7:30pm. The Tükrös ensemble and 2 dancers will be performing - this is the real deal - excellent and real folklore and vibrant performances. They blew everybody away last time they were here. I will try to attach the flyer. It will be at St. Mary of Victories Church, 744 S. #rd St., St. Louis, MO

About me
I am a Dermatologist by trade. I only co-taught one semester of ethnomusicology (at Wash U), and that taught me what it was that I didn't know. Better to keep it fun, really. I started collecting music in earnest after I accidentally bought a record of Romanian folk music. Instead of returning it, I listened to it, fell in love with the stuff, and 1500 LPs and CDs later I'm doing a radio show. My wife and i live in University City, and we go to Eastern Europe and folk music and dance camps 1-3 times a year to collect material.

  • John,

Wonderful show yesterday! Such great music, thank you for putting together such a comprehensive show about music from the Banat. We loved it.

By the way, there was a lot of dancing at the BG festival, it started about an hour after you left and they danced for an hour, perhaps. You'll have to go next year.

  • John,

The Bulgarian community is having a big picnic Sunday May 18th in honor of their national cultural day (Cyrill and Methodius day) in Tilles Park, starting at 12noon. I don't know what the music will be, but there'll be food and drink galore. We will be going at 1pm and I hear it will last quite a while so perhaps you will be able to stop by either before or after your show.

  • A few months ago Arto Jarvela came to focal point and blew everyone away with his fiddle technique. This week's show will start with Finnish music, with an emphasis on groups Arto is in. In the second half of the show I will feature groups from around the Swedish/Finnish/Danish part of the north sea. The groups are all revival musicians who lend a more colorful instrumentation to the sound.
