Joke time! How many Russians does it take to change a light bulb? I'm not going to tell you because you have the opportunity to see the answer yourself! Upstream Theater's most recent production, Return of the Bedbug, answers the age-old question right on stage. It's only one of the many moments that incite giggles, snickers, groans and outright guffaws.

When one is broke, and I mean dead broke, desperation can lead to extremes. If presented with the choice of losing the custody of your only child and, well, the alternative, would you? Would you take it all off to meet your financial obligation? Would you go The Full Monty? Seems kind of dark for a musical, huh? But it isn't. It is a sight to behold (as are some of the individual sights within the context of the show!)

We've all heard boy bands over the decades. From The Osmonds to the Jonas Brothers, boy bands have made young women swoon over and over. Teen and Tiger Beat magazines depend on these groups for their very existence!

Stages St. Louis has opened its 22nd season with a sure-fire hit with Thoroughly Modern Millie starring Mamie Parris and St. Louis' own Ben Nordstrom. It's a fun, light summer fare guaranteed to take your mind off the rest of the world and instead have you smiling and tapping your toes. There are plenty of tap dances, sweet songs, comic relief and misguided heart strings. It is a cookie cutter musical but it's a tasty treat for all.

I have had a wonderful weekend of entertainment! First I had the pleasure of seeing Thoroughly Modern Millie (review on-line at KDHX.org) and then I got to go to the circus! Circus Flora is back celebrating its 22nd season with the story of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The show has thrills, chills and goats. Yes, goats. And a chicken. And really tasty lemonade that goes great with Gus's Pretzels. It's difficult remaining in an adult-like state when there's a clown doing amazing acrobatics and the scent of popcorn wafts all around. But really, is that such a bad thing?

Tuesday night, I didn't sleep well. At. All. So come Wednesday, I was going to be playing the part of the Very Drowsy Reviewer in Chair 23 at the Robert G. Reim Theatre. I worried that I might not pay attention and miss something. Nothing to fear. Stages St. Louis not only woke me up with their dazzling production of The Drowsy Chaperone, they had me literally guffawing! I don't think they're capable of producing anything other than great theater!

Time to date myself. I grew up with Mary Poppins. I was born the year that Julie Andrews won the Oscar for Mary Poppins. (You'll have to do the research from there.) I have even been told that I look like Julie Andrews. I guess you could say I'm a bit attached to everything Mary. I was given the honor of being able to see the new Broadway musical this past Tuesday. To review it. Maybe it's not the best of plans to send a life-long fan to review the show. She might be a bit harsh.
