It's a virtual explosion of fun -- The Big Bang!, hosted by real-life emergency room physician Jeffrey Hallazgo (Dr. Jeff), recently named by the Riverfront Times as the "Best FM Radio Personality" in the "Best Of St. Louis 2011" issue. 'The Big Bang!' is a rollicking, fast-paced, action-packed 3 hour program featuring the best of the Sound of Young America - obscure '60s R&B and soul, with a little rock & roll thrown in as well, all in the style of classic Top 40 Radio. Feel free to e-mail your requests to Dr. Jeff.

  • Now available on the Video section of the Big Bang! homepage - in honor of the man who we're paying tribute to this Friday night, September 30 at Off Broadway - "Higher Ground: A Tribute To Stevie Wonder and Benefit for 88.1 KDHX" - Stevie Wonder from his 1966 Tamla LP "Up-Tight!" and "Uptight (Everything's Alright)." This tune, thanks to co-writer Sylvia Moy, saved Stevie's career at Motown. He had not had a hit since 'Fingertips, Pt 2' in 1963, and the fear that his voice was changing as a result of his reaching puberty was so great at Motown that he was almost let go from the label. Enter Sylvia Moy, who wrote a tune to adapt to Stevie's changing voice, and this was that tune, and it became a hit after its release in November 1965.

Another interesting tidbit: during the recording session in October 1965, Sylvia Moy had the lyrics to "Uptight" with her...but not in braille for Stevie. So Sylvia sang the lyrics through Stevie's headphones one line ahead of what he was singing and, according to Moy in a 2008 interview, "he never missed a beat."

  • Last month on July 20th, just for something fun and different, I did an entire program based on a three-hour random sample of what was on the Billboard Hot 100 on the day man landed on the moon, July 20th, 1969. The response was so surprisingly overwhelming and positive that, based on numerous suggestions to do a program like that on a regular basis, this Wednesday I'll be beginning a monthly special feature on the show - The Big Bang! Time Capsule. Every third Wednesday of the month, I'll be doing what I did on the Moon Landing show - a three hour glimpse into what was on the Billboard Hot 100 and what was on your radio that day on a particular year.

This Wednesday, I'll be featuring a random sampling of the charts and radio playlists from August 17th, 1968. Including this week's Big Bang! Pick Hit Of The Week! - the #3 hit from that week, on the way down the charts after spending 5 weeks over the summer of 1968 at #1: comedy writer Mason Williams, with a tune many guitarists use as a barometer of their skill level, "Classical Gas." Have a great week - looking forward to spending some time with you this Wednesday!

  • You know, everybody likes to think their senior year music was the best ever, but 1969 was really, really special music-wise. It was the first year I had my own radio, and it just lit up with that music. Thank you for the moon-landing program.

  • To my "mighty fine" friend, Gene Roberts. How appropriate that the very first post I put on this wall is about the man who was there for my first ever radio show at KCLC and was integral in my coming to KDHX. When I first went on the air at KCLC in 1993, hosting a show on Monday nights at 9pm, right at the transition from 3 hours of bluegrass back to their main format (smooth jazz), the first person I met was Gene Roberts, who hosted "Country Function, Bluegrass Junction" from 6-9pm. From the very first day there, Gene, along with Larry Allen, could not have made me feel more welcome. Every Monday night for three years was an absolute joy. Then, in 2001, when KDHX put out an audition call for hosts for their new morning shows, one of the people who helped recruit me and promote me to the powers that be was one Mr. Gene Roberts. My very first experience behind the board at KDHX was Gene and Larry's show - they knew that I had to learn how to operate the board in order to do my own show, and they allowed me to take the wheel.

Gene, I will forever be in your debt. Thank you for everything. I imagine that, somewhere in Heaven, "Iron Mountain Baby" is playing and the Eternal version of "Country Function, Bluegrass Junction" has just begun.

    Rest in peace, my friend.

WOW. Wow, wow, wow. Thank you all so very much for your amazing support for KDHX 88.1 FM during the Big Bang yesterday afternoon. Despite feeling very much under the weather and experiencing some technical glitches along the way, and thanks to the incredible pitching by my friend Doug Morgan, preliminary figures indicate that we almost TRIPLED the goal for the program. The Spring Membership Drive continues until Sunday afternoon, so please show your support to KDHX by calling 314-664-3688 or pledge online at www.kdhx.org! Again, thank you all so much!!

Glad you enjoy them! Thanks for checking them out!
