Scott Allen

St. Louis has long had an appreciation for the music of Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven. Last night the local music community came up with a nice save.

As the leader of two influential alternative-rock bands of the '80s and '90s, David Lowery has spent over 25 years in the music business.

Lucero is a band of road warriors in the truest sense. Playing 150 to 200 dates a year, the Memphis-based group prides itself as workhorses.

Lydia Loveless 11/18/11

Stealing your heart -- and a few beers from the fridge -- Lydia Loveless is like the girlfriend who jacks your El Camino and leaves you in the dust. Then, for some reason you still love her for it.

During the Jayhawks' set at the Pageant last night, guitarist Gary Louris advised the St. Louis audience that there were "people here from the label tonight so we have to be on our best behavior."

Ben Folds is no stranger to playing packed houses full of excited fans in St. Louis. However, last night's room was different.

For the past 15 years Drive-By Truckers have stayed extremely busy. The Athens, Ga. based group has released nearly an album a year, toured to support their output and served as the backing band for other luminary musicians like Booker T. Jones and Bettye LaVette. All the while Patterson Hood, guitarist and main songwriter, has been at the center of it all.

Halfway through his performance, Jay Farrar told the audience at the Sheldon Concert Hall that this venue is, "Nicer than the places we normally play. Believe it."

Whether he realizes it or not, Jay Farrar, much like the afternoon sunlight in fall, casts a long shadow over the St. Louis music scene.

A quote that best summed up last evening's performance by Robbie Fulks came via a song by opener Willy Porter: "A measure of a man is what he does when he is alone."
