Time zone: central

Miles Davis “Jean-Pierre”
from We Want Miles CD Album (Columbia 1982) —After disappearing for several years, Miles came back strong in 82, especially on this cut.

Christian Scott “K.K.P.D.”
from Yesterday You Said Tomorrow CD Album (Concord Jazz 2010) N  —Contemporary jazz trumpeter who doesn't hold back from making statements - check out that title, for example.

Rick Ross “Tears of Joy”
from Teflon Don CD Album (Slip N Slide 2010) N  —Cee-Lo guests on this Miami rapper's new record - hard groove here sounds nice after the Christian Scott, I think.

Ray, Goodman & Brown “Special Lady”
from Best of Ray, Goodman & Brown CD Comp (Polygram 1996) —R.I.P. baritone vocalist Al Goodman who co-wrote this gorgeous piece of romantic fluff.

The Moments “Love on a Two-Way Street”
from Love On a Two-Way Street - The Best of the Moments CD Comp (Rhino 1996) —Al Goodman wasn't actually in the Moments when they recorded this, but heck, I want to play it in his honor, anyway. I bet he sang it live a lot.

The Chi-Lites “Stoned Out of My Mind”
from 20 Greatest Hits CD Comp (Brunswick 2001) —Oh, sweet 70s soul, how I love thee.

Jackson 5 “Mama's Pearl”
from Third Album CD Album (Motown 1970) —I'm suddenly transported to 7th grade recess, staying inside to watch the girls choreograph those early J5 singles.

Macy Gray “Lately”
from The Sellout CD Album (Universal/Concord 2010) N  —Definitely paying tribute to 70s soul tropes here - this groove could have been on a Chi-Lites record.

Los Lobos “All My Bridges Burning”
from Tin Can Trust CD Album (Shout! Factory 2010) N  —I do wish they'd turn off the compression in the studio, but other than that sonic complaint, I dig the new Los Lobos quite a bit. Coming to stores soon.

Peter Case “Somebody Told the Truth”
from Dig! CD Album (Yep Roc 2010) N  —I got to meet Peter Case last week, even though I didn't get to see him perform. He told me that he's been shit on by birds but kept playing.

Rolling Stones “Ventilator Blues”
from Exile On Main Street CD Album (Universal Records 1972) N  —I can't tell you how much fun it was to drive around listening to this remastered disc last week - perfect for the car.

The Strikers “Kick Around”
from Test Patterns CD Comp (Hi-Test / BDR 2010) N L —CD reissue of classic St. Louis new wave comp from 1981 - party tomorrow at Tap Room for this & the Welders.

The Welders “P-E-R-V-E-R-T”
from The Welders CD Album (BDR 1979) N L —St. Louis band from 1979 finally releases the record they made back then.

The Zanti Misfits “Holier Than Thou”
from Test Patterns CD Comp (Hi-Test / BDR 2010) N L —My fave song from the album.

Phillip Walker “Don't Be Afraid of the Dark”
from Blues CD Album (Hightone 1988) —The original version of the song Robert Cray did - Phillip Walker passed away a few days back - he was underrated and great.

Roy Wood “Rock Down Low”
from Boulders CD Album (Parlophone 1973) —A great track for cowbell lovers - and anybody who likes great rock'n'roll.

Alejandro Escovedo “Faith”
from Street Songs of Love CD Album (Fantasy 2009) N  —Alejandro duets with Bruce - and a cowbell.

Bryan Ferry “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall”
from These Foolish Things CD Album (Island 1973) —This classic just popped into my head the other day - what a great version of Dylan's song.

The Coral “She's Comin' Around”
from Butterfly House CD Album (Deltasonic 2010) N  —Another gem of pop perfection from this band that can't buy attention in the U.S.

Susan Cowsill “Avenue of the Indians”
from Lighthouse CD Album (Threadhead Records 2010) N  —An evocative song about childhood and memory.

The Posies “Apology”
from Dear 23 CD Album (Geffen 1990) —Sometimes I forget how good these guys were back in the day - this song could've been reason enough for them to be in the reincarnated Big Star.

R.E.M. “Maps and Legends”
from Fables Of The Reconstruction (25th Anniversary Edition) (IRS/Capitol 1985) N  —One of those swirly type R.E.M. songs - guitar arpeggios and Mike Mills counterpoint.

Pete Townshend “Slit Skirts”
from Gold CD Comp (Hip-O 1995) —Of all the songs with the line "Recriminations fester," this is easily my favorite.

Punch Brothers “Alex”
from Antifogrmatic CD Album (Nonesuch 2010) N  —That part when the mandolin jumps out so loud gets me every time - lovely, mysterious little song.

Tim O'Brien “No Way to Stop the Flow”
from Chicken and Egg CD Album (Howdy Skies 2010) N  —Just a few months back, this guy was playing in Mark Knopfler's band.

Patty Griffin “If I Had My Way”
from Downtown Church CD Album (CMG 2010) N  —Magnificent gospel number - Buddy Miller's rumbling guitar threatens to tear that building down.

Eric Gales “Bad Lawbreaker”
from Relentless CD Album (Shrapnel 2010) N  —Heavy groove, intoxicating blues.

Bill Kirchen “Bump Wood”
from Word To The Wise CD Album (Proper 2010) N  —I like all the guest stars, but I kinda wish he had a whole album of this sort of thing in him.

Junior Wells “Prison Bars All Around Me”
from Junior Wells (1957-1963) CD Comp (Paula 1991) N  —An early and especially powerful vocal from the great Junior Wells.

Christine Kittrell “Sittin' Here Drinking”
from Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues, 1945-1970 CD Comp (Lost Highway www.losthighwayrecords.com 2004) —They say it'll help you to forget.

Grant Green “Tumbling Tumbleweeds”
from Goin' West (The Rudy Van Gelder Edition Remastered) CD Album (Blue Note 1962) —An exceptionally enjoyable take on a different kind of standard - with a very young Herbie Hzncock on piano.

Court Yard Hounds “Ain't No Son”
from Court Yard Hounds CD Album (Columbia 2010) N  —Emily & Martie co-wrote this one, and I think it's the best song on a very good record.

Gary Stewart “In Some Room Above the Street”
from The Essential Gary Stewart CD Comp (RCA 1975) —Thanks to James Weber and Phil Harris for reminding me of how great this guy is.

Rockhouse Ramblers “What the People's Wants”
from Lies & Damn Lies CD Album (self 2010) N L —One of St. Louis's finest bands recorded this last CD a few years back, then broke up, and waited until now to release it.

Asleep at the Wheel and Leon Rausch “Truck Driver's Blues”
from It's A Good Day CD Album (Bismeaux 2010) N  —Hey, Willie Nelson guest stars on this cut, and he's a young buck next to Leon Rausch.
