Los Lobos “On Main Street”
from Tin Can Trust CD Album (Shout! Factory 2010) —78. This record doesn't rank with the band's best work, but as it's Los Lobos, it's worth hearing.
Peter Case “Somebody Told The Truth”
from Wig! CD Album (Yep Roc 2010) —76. Back to basics rock and blues, not that Case ever left that nourishing ground. One of my favorite concert moments of the year was Peter Case playing a duo set at Off Broadway with an unrehearsed drummer, and killing it, while Kings of Leon were being
The Scruffs “Conquer Me”
from Conquest (Scruffsville 2010) —74. Stephen Burns, the legendary Memphis rocker, with Mike Baillie (guitar), Simon Cottrell (bass), and Mark Rodgers (drums)
Delta Spirit “Bushwick Blues”
from History From Below CD Album (Rounder www.rounder.com 2010) —71. An album that I didn't spend nearly enough time with, but an excellent sophomore release from the San Diego band. Maybe the hardest rocking album Rounder has ever put out.
The Walkmen “Victory”
from Lisbon (Fat Possum 2010) —69. The Walkmen played a brilliant and sold out show at Off Broadway this year.
Eli Paperboy Reed “Just Like Me”
from Come and Get It! (EMI 2010) —64. This might have placed higher but Mike Elizondo's production (or maybe Bob Ludwig's mastering) is a little too bright for this slice of Motown and Stax revivalism.
Depedro “What Goes On”
from Nubes de Papel (Nat Geo 2010) —61. Jairo Zavala backed up by members of Calexico covering the Velvet Underground.
Old 97s “Champaign, Illinois”
from The Grand Theatre Volume One (New West www.newwestrecords.com 2010) —60. One of the most clever and catchy songs from a songwriter with a lot of those -- Rhett Miller. Apparently, Miller cleared his loving theft of "Desolation Row" with Dylan, who only asked for a 50/50 cut. Old 97's perform at the Pageant on February 18,
Free Energy “Young Hearts”
from Stuck on Nothing CD Album (Caroline 2010) —56. A favorite of my fellow Wed. morning DJ Allen Dahm. A great rock & roll debut that channels Thin Lizzy as well as the Hold Steady.
Gil Scott-Heron “I'm New Here” CD Album (XL 2010) —44. Less than 1/2 hour long but a powerful 1/2 hour it is.
The Tallest Man on Earth “Burden of Tomorrow”
from The Wild Hunt CD Album (Dead Oceans 2010) —41. Not another new Dylan; just a rivetting singer and songwriter by the name of Kristian Matsson of Dalarna, Sweden. Tune in for the rest of my favorite albums of 2010.
