Steve Winwood “We're All Looking”
from Nine Lives (Columbia 2008) —It's pretty easy to convince yourself this track was recorded in 1969 with Traffic - it's that good.
Gang Of Four “Damaged Goods”
from Entertainment! (Rhino 1979) —Just your typical Peter Green/Jeremy Specer Fleetwood Mac song seque into Gang of Four. Happens all the time.
The Clash “Jimmy Jazz”
from London Calling CD Album (Epic 1979) —These guys were so far ahead of the curve for new wave back in the day - listen to Topper Headon's drums and find anybody else who could pull this off at the time.
Kevin Gordon “Gloryland” (Crowville Collective 2010) N —I'd almost forgotten this really talented singer/songwriter. It's been a lot of years since he put something out, but the new one sounds good.
Teddy Thompson “Looking For a Girl”
from Bella (Verve Forecast 2011) —As often as I play songs from it, I probably should have included Teddy Thompson among my fave records last year - a year with lots and lots of records to love is a good year, I always say.
NRBQ “It Comes to Me Naturally”
from NRBQ at Yankee Stadium (Mercury 1978) —One of the world's greatest drummers, Tom Ardolino, passed away a couple weeks back. Nobody played like he did.
The Like “Wishing He Was Dead”
from Release Me MP3/file Album (Geffen 2010) —I still thank Edward Burch for introducing me to this magnificent pop gem that got virtually no attention when it came out.
Meshell Ndegeocello “Objects In mirror Are Closer Than They Appear”
from Weather (Naive 2014 2011) N —The more I play it, the more I love it. I don't keep close track of the hierarchy, but I think this could be a top five release for me last year.
Amy Winehouse “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?”
from Lioness: Hidden Treasures (Island 2011) N —Among the greatest vocal performances I heard last year. Beyond stunning to take a song as familiar as this one and make it brand new.
Laibach “Across the Universe”
from Let It Be (Ekektra 1988) —From one of the silliest albums of all time, but a haunting rendition of this song nonetheless.
Spirit “Fresh Garbage”
from Spirit (Legacy 1968) —A cowbell classic I thought I'd pull out again - I didn't realize this was actually Spirit's first single.
Nils Lofgren “Old School” (Vision Music 2011) N —Nils sounds kinda cranky here. It's rockin' hard, but he's one step from yelling "Get off my lawn."
Al Basile “Distant Ships”
from The Goods (Sweetspot 2011) N —A very good singer and bluesy songwriter; it always makes me happy to remember him. And his cornet playing is a dream.
Lyle Lovett “Farmer Brown / Chicken Reel”
from Natural Forces CD Album (Lost Highway 2009) —Sending this one out to my friend Allison, who posted on Facebook about her 7th grade class not understanding the phrase "choke my chicken." What's wrong with kids today?
