Mavis Staples “You Are Not Alone” (Anti www.anti.com 2010) N —Coming in at #38, from Mavis Staple's new album produced by Jeff Tweedy (Wilco). This song was also written by Jeff.
The Moondoggies “Can't Be in the Middle”
from Tidelands (Hardly Art 2010) N —At #32, showing that the Pac Northwest isn't just grunge and indie rock, the Moondoggies play a beautifully rustic Americana.
Fionn Regan “Protection Racket”
from The Shadows of an Empire (Speak N' Spell 2010) N —Fionn Regan comes from the coastal city of Bray, Ireland and he mixes folk, blues and rock into this, his 3rd album coming in at #29 in my top 40 of 2010.
The Gaslight Anthem “The Diamond Church Street Choir”
from American Slang CD Album (Side One Dummy 2010) N —At #27, from the 2nd album of this Jersey band. If the Boss is willing to sing with them on stage (check out youtube), they're good enough for me!
Jamey Johnson “California Riots”
from The Guitar Song (Mercury 2010) N —Considered country, I'd never heard Jamey Johnson until this year when he put out his 3rd album, a double album featuring a white and a black side. Great album coming in at #26. This song features vocal help from Bill Anderson.
The National “Bloodbuzz Ohio”
from High Violet CD Album (4AD www.4ad.com) N —From my 22nd favorite album of 2010 comes my favorite song of the year. "I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees ..." is probably my favorite line this year.
Teenage Fanclub “Shock and Awe”
from Shadows CD Album (Merge www.mergerecords.com 2010) N —Halfway there, at #20 comes this incredibly influential Scottish band who were putting out straight ahead rock and roll in the early 90's when grunge was it. They came through that period and still are putting out great music today.
Best Coast “Crazy for You” CD Album (Mexican Summer 2010) N —At #19 and only 23 years old, Bethany Cosentino wrote these songs immediately after returning to California after trying college on the east coast. Direct, some would say simple, lyrics about love, lost or found with modern day surfer sounds.
Title Tracks “Every Little Bit Hurts”
from It Was Easy (Ernest Jennings 2010) N —At #17, as mentioned earlier when Georgie James split up, the Mynabirds and this band led by John Davis were formed. From their debut album.
Glossary “Lonely is a Town”
from Feral Fire (Rebel Group www.therebelgroup.com 2010) N —At #16 comes Glossary, an unheralded Tennessee band who put out their 5th studio album early this year. Their 4th album as well as solo offerings by the two leaders of the band are available free on their website. All three are great. Check them out!
Dylan LeBlanc “If Time Was For Wasting”
from Pauper's Field (Rough Trade 2010) N —Closing out today's show, at #15 Dylan LeBlanc, a 20 year old native of Shreveport, LA put out a great album this year, his debut. I hope to hear a lot more from him in the future.
