6:59am

Faye Hunter “Blinded”
from The Water Music Compilation Album (Unknown unk 1989) —Faye Hunter, formerly of Let's Active, passed away the other day. This delightful solo cut is just a hint of what she could have done if she'd kept at the music thing.

7:03am

Sherry Rich “Pandora Mink”
from Dakota Avenue (Vitamin 2012) —This Australian singer/songwriter impressed the heck out of me when she did an instore at Euclid Records last Friday. The record, produced by the late Jay Bennett, took 12 years to come out. Don't know why.

7:08am

Laura Nyro “Stoned Soul Picnic”
from Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (Columbia 1968) —After all these years, I still wonder what possessed her to use the words "surrey on down."

7:15am

Fleetwood Mac “Bleed to Love Her”
from Say You Will (Reprise 2003) —This could have gone on a Buckingham solo record, but it didn't, so I'll say it's a late F. Mac triumph.

7:19am

John Lennon “Scared”
from Walls And Bridges (Apple 1974) —Dig that wolf howl. And then the grinding rhythm track.

7:23am

Willie Nile “Sing Me a Song”
from Willie Nile (Razor & Tie 1980) —I do love the new Willie Nile, but it's nice to remember he's been this great for 33 years now.

7:30am

Sam Phillips “I Need Love (with the Section Quartet)”
from Martinis & Bikinis (Virgin 1994) —John Wendland has a new record from Sam Phillips that I haven't even seen. Until I find it, here's a cool alternate of a classic from her.

7:33am

Richard Thompson “The Great Valerio”
from The Chrono Show (Beeswing 2004) —Hey, I only just now got this collection of live stuff a few days ago, even though it came out 9 years ago. Nobody gets everything right away.

7:39am

Peter Hammill “Candle”
from Fool's Mate (Virgin 1971) —I'm starting to dip my toes into the Hammill / Van Der Graaf waters, and I'm finding lots of cool treasures.

7:44am

John Cale “Verses”
from 5 Tracks (Or 2004) —Sometimes, it's just comforting to hear that big, bold voice.

7:48am

Buffalo Springfield “No Sun Today”
from Buffalo Springfield (box set) (Rhino 2001) —Had a dream last night you came walking through my life.

7:50am

Cheap Trick “Decaf”
from Rockford (Cheap Trick Unlimited 2006) —Wonder if they're ever gonna do another record.

7:54am

Ana Popovic “Growing Up Too Soon”
from Can You Stand the Heat (Artiste Exclusive 2013) N  —An interesting non-blues number.

8:01am

Bob Dylan “Diamond Joe”
from Good As I Been to You (Columbia 1992) —I still like those two albums Dylan made when he went through writers block for a little while.

8:04am

Jimmie Dale Gilmore “Black Snake Moan”
from Braver Newer World (Ekektra 1996) —A cool take on the Blind Lemon Jefferson classic.

8:08am

Krystle Warren “Time Has Told Me”
from Way to Blue: The Songs of Nick Drake (Navigator 2013) N  —I don't know who this guy is, but this is a very cool piano-based cover of one of my fave Nick Drake songs.

8:14am

Ed Snodderly “Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey”
from Let Us In Americana: The Music of Paul McCartney for Linda (Reviver 2013) N  —Another complete unknown to me, but a completely reimagined version of this one takes some real guts.

8:20am

Danny Barnes “Pizza Box” (ATO 2009) —This guy always makes me smile.

8:23am

Louis Jordan “Early In the Morning”
from Jivin' With Jordan (Proper 2002) —Rumba blues!

8:26am

Piano Red “She's Mine”
from Lost Atlanta Tapes (Landslide 2010) —This guy was Mr. Entertainment.

8:31am

Jimmy Wilson “Blues at Sundown”
from The Bob Geddins Blues Legacy (JSP 2009) —There were so many blues records made, it's amazing how many great ones never went anywhere.

8:33am

Allen Toussaint “River Boat”
from I Believe to My Soul (Rhino 2005) —Which came first, this or Proud Mary?

8:36am

Elmore James “My Best Friend”
from Whose Muddy Shoes (MCA 1991) —I just can't get enough of Elmore James - it took me a long time to realize what a great singer he was.

8:40am

Davell Crawford “Don't Ever Be Blue”
from My Gift to You (Basin Street 2014) N  —This guy can sing - and I like the conjunction of torchy r'n'b with Cajun fiddle and accordion.

8:45am

Alice Smith “Loyalty”
from She (Rainwater 2013) N  —I'm not very good at compiling lists of fave songs, but this one has to be one of my faves this year.

8:49am

Sarah Bollinger “Hate to Love You”
from Both/And (self-released 2013) N L —St. Louis singer with some serious chops and a flair for funk. CD Release Aug. 30 at the Gramophone.

8:53am

Was (Not Was) “Mr. Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore”
from Boo! (Ryko 2008) —Speaking of a flair for funk.

9:01am

David Bowie “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”
from The Next Day (ISO / Columbia 2013) N  —I think the songs on this record work better when you hear them one at a time - definitely this one sounds good this morning.

9:05am

Joan Armatrading “Busy With You”
from Starlight (429 www.429records.com 2012) —I like Joan's jazzy feel - hey, how come I seem to be the only KDHX dj who ever plays Joan Armatrading?

9:10am

Bryan Ferry “Bob Dylan's Dream”
from Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan (Amnesty International 2012) —So many treasures on this multi-disc tribute. I'm still making discoveries after 18 months.

9:15am

Big Star “You Can't Have Me”
from Third / Sister Lovers (Ryko 1978) —I love being able to play Big Star now and again!

9:18am

Sloan “I Hate My Generation”
from Twice Removed (Geffen 1994) —I had an idea for a song similar to this concept back in 1979. But mine wasn't nearly as catchy or cool as this one.

9:20am

The Blind Eyes “Now, Again”
from World Record (self-released 2013) N L —Just play that chord over and over again - that's the way to start a record!

9:25am

Ethan Johns “Hello Sunshine”
from If Not Now When? (Three Crows 2013) N  —Noted record producer writes great songs.

9:28am

Villagers “The Waves”
from Awayland (Domino 2013) N  —One man's innocence is another's chance.

9:33am

Vasen “Långt Nere I Småland / Slangpolska”
from Nordic Roots: A Northside Collection (Northside 1998) —I'm missing umlauts, though I did pick up some other odd accent marks. Cool folk stuff with a nod to the Beatles.

9:40am

Habib Koite and Bamada “Din Din Wo (Little Child)”
from Muso Ko (World Village 1995) —One of the coolest sounding African artists - Koite comes from Mali. Highly recommended.

9:45am

Sonny Landreth “Brave New Girl”
from Elemental Journey (Proper 2012) —That's guitar playing right there!

9:50am

John Scofield “Already September”
from A Moment's Peace (Decca 2011) —So is this.
