Leonard Cohen “Closing Time”
from Live In London CD Album (Columbia 2009) —Today's show, which will have plenty of songs he wouldn't necessarily have liked, is dedicated to the memory of Bob Reuter.
Joan Armatrading “Starlight” (429 www.429records.com 2012) N —I am really digging this new record from Joan. Much jazzier, more complex than usual, but highly memorable songs and beautiful slices of lyrical truth.
Richard Thompson “Stony Ground”
from Electric (New West 2013) N —I love Richard's playing on this one. I think that's Buddy Miller grounding the song on rhythm guitar, too.
The Bees “The Russian”
from Free the Bees (Virgin 2004) —They were billed as A Band of Bees here in the States, but under any name, this is one boss instrumental cut.
Camera Obscura “Desire Lines” (4AD 2013) N —I don't love them the way John Wendland loves them, but I know a good song when I hear one.
Darden Smith “Reason to Live”
from Love Calling (Compass www.compassrecords.com 2013) N —Always a pleasure to hear new music from this guy. I remember seeing him open for Rosanne Cash a million years ago and running out to get his record as soon as possible after that.
