from Midwest Funk - Funk 45s From Tornado Alley (jazzman 2004) —recorded at Cincinnati's Jewel studios in 1971 while the band members were in high school. The drummer's granny paid for the session.


The Groove Merchants “There's Got to Be Someone for Me”
from Texas Funk Black Gold From The Lone Star State 1968-1975 (Jazzman Records Ltd. 2005) —Lou Pride on vocals on this 1970 Seumi Records 45, recorded in El Paso.


Roy Roberts “You Ain't Miss It”
from Carolina Funk Funk 45s From The Atlantic Coast (jazzman 2007) —previously unreleased; recorded in Greensboro, NC in the early 1970s.


Alonzo Smith “Love Machine”
from Golden State Funk Impossibly Rare Funk From The Bay Area (Ace 2007) —recorded circa 1972


Stevie Wonder “I Wish”
from Songs In The Key Of Life CD Album (Universal/Motown 1976) —this classic album was 1st released on Motown in 1976, and might be considered the peak of Stevie's 6-7 year run of channeling songs and ideas from somewhere very special.


King Johnson “Hey Yeah”
from Luck So Strange (Royal Kook Music 2000) —Oliver Wood and company, recorded in Atlanta back in Aug of 2000.


Hip Grease “Rough, Tough And Tumble”
from Hip Grease EP (unreleased) (Artist 2012) L —One of Andy Coco's musical projects. The songs on this album were recorded live in the summer of 2012.


Inez & Charlie Foxx “(1-2-3-4-5-6-7) Count The Days”
from Dynamic Grooves Funk And Groovy Soul From The Vaults Of Scepter, Wand, Dynamo And Musicor (Ace/BGP 2011) —Siblings Inez and Charles Foxx of "Mockingbird" fame. This cut was made for Dynamo Records in 1967.


Lee Fields And The Expressions featuring Lady “Faithful Man”

John Ginty “Black Cat (feat. Albert Castiglia)”
from Bad News Travels (americanshowplace music 2013) —a fine B3 player, and all around good guy, from NJ. People likely 1st heard of John thru his work in Robert Randolph's band.


Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens “By Your Side”
from What Have you Done, My Brother (Daptone 2009) —let's send this one out to the young woman I talked to at the Big Mike Aguirre show at BCD who was pleasantly surprised I was a fan of Naomi Shelton.


Home Cookin' “Rivers Of Babylon featuring Brenda Boykin”
from Afrobilly Soul Stew (Blue Dot Records 2000) —I really dig the arrangement on this version of "Rivers". And I also dig the warmth and tone in Miss Boykin's voice.


Dogtown Allstars “Little Old Money Maker”

from High On The Blues (Fantasy Records 1992) —an intersting album, as it was recorded for and released by Stax, but used the Hi Rhythm Section and was produced by Hi's Willie Mitchell.


Johnny Truitt “No Sad Times”
from Southern Funkin' Louisiana Funk And Soul 1967-1979 (Ace/BGP 2005) —from 1973; while many of us were unaware of Johnny Truitt, he was very influential in the deep south (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida)


Bluesiana Hot Sauce “I Walk On Guilded Splinters”
from Bluesiana Hot Sauce (Shanachie 1994) —all star cast included Allen Toussaint, Toots Thielemans, Michael Brecker and many more.


Galactic “Quiet Please”
from Vintage Reserve (Volcano Entertainment 2003) —this tune was originally recorded for the Crazyhorse Mongoose album in 1997.
