J.B. Lenoir “The Whale Swallowed Me”
from Vietnam Blues The Complete L+R Recordings (Evidence 1995) —originally released on German LPs in 1966 & 1967. JB died in April 1967 at age 38, due to a heart attack brought on by injuries he suffered in car accident three weeks earlier.


Brian Curran “Tribute To Bukka”
from Straight Up Blues (Wildstone Audio 2001) L —"Bukka" is Bukka White, of course.


Sonny Terry And Brownie McGhee “Pawn Shop Blues”
from Hometown Blues (Sony Music Entertainment 1993) —the tracks on this cd were recorded in 1948 and 1951 by Bob Shad for the Sittin' In With label.


Reverend Robert Wilkins “Don't You Let Nobody Turn You 'Round”
from Remember Me (GENES 1993) —all but 1 cut on this album were recorded in 1971, although his recording career goes back to 1929.


Phoebe Snow w/ The Holmes Brothers “Beams Of Heaven”
from Shout, Sister, Shout! (M.C. Records 2003) —Shout, Sister, Shout! is a tribute album to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The Holmes Bros provide the band-backing for many of the artists on this CD.


Campbell Brothers “A Change Is Gonna Come”
from Can You Feel It ? (Ropeadope 2005) —the Campbell Bros come out the "Sacred Steel" tradition.


Erskine Oglesby “Caress Me Baby”
from Blues Dancin' (Black & Tan Records 2000) L —the all St. Louis band here features Erskine, Bob Lohr, Brian Melching (Pennsylvania Slim), Kenny Lawrence and Nephew Davis.

from Account to Me (Old Pal Records 2013) —all the cds in this set were finalists for Independent Blues CD of the year at the IBC awards in Jan 2014. Hanks' CD won out, against much very stiff competition. There is just SO MUCH great local & regional music out there!

Peanuts Wilson “Cast Iron Arm”
from Rockin' Bones 1950s Punk And Rockabilly (Rhino 2006) —Johnny "Peanuts" Wilson, the tune was co-written by Roy Orbinson (but not by Wilson himself.)


Johnny Kidd & The Pirates “Shakin' All Over”
from Rockin' Bones 1950s Punk And Rockabilly (Rhino 2006) —a #1 record in England in June 1962 by Frederick Heath, er, Johnny Kidd.
