Larry Johnson “Up North Blues”
from Fast and Funky (Blue Goose 1969) —this album was originally released on Blue Goose Records in 1971. Larry was a NYC black guitarist who was an acolyte of Rev Gary Davis. Loads of young, white players flocked to Davis, but not that many black players of the time did.
Brian Curran “St. Louis Stomp”
from Straight Up Blues (Wildstone Audio 2001) L —Brian, Tom and Dave are playing a Guitar Showcase show at The Focal point SAT, July 26th. As usually happens at Focal Point showcase concerts, the fellas will inspire each other to great heights, delighting each other & the audience, too!
Alex Bradford “Feel Like I'm Running for the Lord (Alternate Take 3)”
from Rainbow In the Sky (Specialty 1992) —this cut features the Bradford Specials on vocals - James Brandon, Charles Campbell, Louis Gibson, Billy Harper and Jonathon Jackson.
The Detroiters “I Trust In Jesus”
from Old Time Religion (Specialty 1992) —the group's origins trace back to the late 1930s in Texas, and they performed and recorded at least into the early 1960s.
The Golden Echoes “Where Shall I Be (When the First Trumpet Sounds) (Take 5)”
from Old Time Religion (Specialty 1992) —featuring the powerful vocals of high leads of Little Axe Broadnax and the fine baritone of former Soul Stirrer Paul Foster.
Barbecue Bob “Mississippi Heavy Water Blues”
from Chocolate To the Bone (Yazoo 1992) —Bob Hicks was an Atlanta-based 12 string guitarist who utilized a very percussive approach. He only recorded for a few years, as he succumbed at a young age to "consumption".
John Mooney “Jinx Blues”
from Son and Moon (Fatback Records 2014) N —brand new music from John Mooney. This is a tribute to an important figure in "Moon's" life, Son House. A young John Mooney met and got to know House in Rochester, NY in 1971.
Joe Price “Kitchen Picken”
from 25 Below (Tailer-Records 1996) —Joe and his wife (and playing partner) Vicki, will be performing at Blues City Deli tonight (July 24th.) These folks are special - don't miss 'em!
The Claudettes “Big Easy Women”
from Live At KDHX 09March2014 (KDHX 2014) —this song is not available on The Claudettes studio CD. The Claudettes are Johnny Iguanna and Michael Caskey (piano and drum duo) and are playing BBs on Thursday, July 31st. Their boss, Yana, will likely be along to keep her eyes on them. The boys can
Hook Herrera “Honey”
from Tonite (Reel Music) —1990's era music from Hook Herrera, featuring Matt Abts and John Bazz - as well was many other close friends. Hook's music really works for me, and I hope it does for you as well. This is the Real Deal !
Sugar Ray & the Bluetones “Nothing But The Devil”
from Living Tear To Tear (Severn 2014) N —This CD won't be released until August, but I snagged a copy at the Bluenotes show at BBs last week (you should NOT have missed it.) This is the toughest I've heard Norcia sing in a long time - channeling the spirits of Wolf and Mud, no joke!
Henry Gray “I'm Talkin' About You”
from Lucky Man (BLIND PIGRECORDS 1988) —Henry Gray - Howlin' Wolf piano man for almost 15 years before Gray moved back to Louisiana to take care of family. Henry is STILL performing, and will turn 90 in January.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Restless”
from You're Gonna Get It (MCA 1978) —This is from Petty's 2nd album, originally released in 1978. I just felt like reminding you how TOUGH Petty & his Heartbreakers used to be. This is a rock 'n' roll album - straight up!
The Trip Daddys “Lincoln Continental”
from What Comes Natural (Daddy Time Records 2014) N L —The newest offering from Craig Straubinger and the rest of his Daddys. I'm totally diggin' this album - plenty of rock 'n' roll with a real bluesy feel. Good stuff!
Lynn Drury “Come To My House” (Old Shoes Prod. 2014) N —I missed meeting Ms Drury by 90 seconds when she dropped off copies of her album at KDHX. Well, I'll just have to make due with the CD, but I sure am sorry I missed her...that said, this is a really good album. Checking it out might be a good idea.
Big Jeff Chapman “From Nothing”
from na (NA url 2014) L —a sneak peek of new music coming our way from Big Jeff this Fall.
Selwyn Birchwood “She Loves Me Not”
from Don't Call No Ambulance (Alligator 2014) N —One of the "hot" new artists on the roster at Alligator Records. This young man is very talented, has an interesting voice, writes all his own tunes, and his band features bari sax - that in itself very cool.
Alan Evans Trio “Check Your Lugnuts”
from Drop Hop (Royal Family Records 2012) —It'll be a groovin' good time at The Gramophone tonight, as Evan's brings his new band Playonbrother into St. Louis for a guaranteed good time. It's an “electrified soul rock” band, with Beau Sasser on B-3 and Danny Mayer on guitar
Raphael Wressnig & Alex Schultz “Wichita Lineman”
from Soul Gift (ZYX Music 2012) —I can honestly say this is the ONLY version of this tune that I enjoy - otherwise, it trends toward the maudlin for me. Enjoy this utterly soulful version on me - no charge!
