Marah “Within the Spirit Sagging”
from Life Is a Problem (Valley Farm Songs 2010) —40. Continuing the FLGH Top 80 of 2010. Coming in at #40, a record that more people would have heard had the band not released it solely on vinyl.
Robert Plant “The Only Sound That Matters”
from Band Of Joy (Rounder 2010) —39. Quite a range of material, with this Milton Mapes cover being the stand out.
Jason Collett “Vanderpool Vanderpool”
from Rat a Tat Tat (Arts & Crafts 2010) —35. A member of the Broken Social Scene, who out does that band, especially in songwriting, on this solo record
Beach House “Norway”
from Teen Dream CD Album (Sub Pop 2009) —25. Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally with an ornately beautiful dream pop album
Chatham County Line “Out of the Running”
from Wildwood CD Single (YepRoc 2010) —23. An underdog pick, and one that, for whatever reason, folks dismissed. Wrong answer. Sat 2/5 Chatham County Line – Off Broadway
Ryan Bingham “Yesterday's Blues”
from Junky Star (Lost Highway 2010) —22. My friend Michael Friedman picks this as song of the year. Certainly one of the best shows of 2010 at the Old Rock House.
Mumford & Sons “After the Storm”
from Sigh No More (Glassnote 2009) —17. An album that came out last year in the UK, but officially in the US this year. Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane.
Bob Dylan “Hard Times In New York Town”
from Witmark Demos (Columbia) —8. Extraordinary listen, and something I would have played more, save that it sounds pretty rough on the radio.
Bruce Springsteen “Come On (Let's Go Tonight)”
from The Promise (Columbia 2010) —4. As we know, unfinished or unreleased songs from the Darkness sessions, many touched up later by Bruce. I love this early version of "Factory."
The National “Conversation 16”
from High Violet CD Album (4AD) —3. One of the most engaging concerts of the year down at the Pageant, and a harrowing and catchy set.
Like everything else, times are approximate.
