Time zone: central

7:01am

The Blues Magoos “Chicken Wire Lady”
from Kaleidoscopic Compendium: The Best of the Blues Magoos (Mercury 1992) —Opening with some early psychedelic awakenings.

7:05am

Paul Revere & The Raiders “Just Like Me”
from the Essential Ride '63-'67 (Columbia 1997) —One of the greatest songs of the 60s, and one that doesn't get enough reverence from the nostalgia crowd.

7:08am

Van Morrison “These Dreams of You”
from Moondance (Warner 1970) —I dreamed of playing cards in the dark, and you lost, and you lied.

7:12am

Dinah Washington “Trombone Butter”
from Dinah Washington Sings Bessie Smith (Verve www.vervemusicgroup.com 1958) —I love Bessie Smith, and I think Dinah Washington did the best tribute she ever got.

7:17am

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong “It Ain't Necessarily So”
from Porgy and Bess (Verve www.vervemusicgroup.com 1958) —If you want to hear Gershwin done to perfection, you might as well start here.

7:23am

Bobbie Gentry “Okolona River Bottom Band”
from An American Quilt 1967-1974 (Raven 2002) —Who knew how smooth this transition would be? My subconscious brain, not my conscious one.

7:26am

Shelby Lynne “Lead Me Love”
from Revelation Road (Everso Records 2011) N  —A beautiful little song on a beautiful little record.

7:32am

Miranda Lambert “Look at Miss Ohio”
from Four the Record (Sony 2011) N  —Once again I find myself liking a Gillian Welch song much better when somebody else sings it.

7:36am

Emmylou Harris “Goodnight Old World”
from Hard Bargain (Nonesuch 2011) N  —A better song than I noticed when I first listened to this still disappointing record.

7:40am

Vince Gill “Tell Me Fool”
from Guitar Slinger (MCA NASHVILLE 2011) N  —I caught Vince Gill on Leno this week - strange he didn't pick one of the songs where he plays hot lead guitar, like this one.

7:45am

Sugar Ray & the Bluetones “(That's Not Yet) One of My Blues”
from Evening (Severn 2011) N  —My review of this record: http://blues.about.com/od/cddvdreview1/fr/Sugar-Ray-And-The-Bluetones-Evening-2011.htm

7:49am

Irma Thomas “It's Raining”
from Time Is On My Side: The Best of Irma Thomas (EMI 1992) —One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest singers in the world.

7:51am

Jerry Townes “Just Say the Word”
from Eccentric Soul: The Nickel & Penny Labels (Numero Group 2011) N  —A brand new crate-digging batch of rare soul from the Numero Group.

7:54am

Conway Twitty & Sam Moore “Rainy Night in Georgia”
from Rhythm Country and Blues (MCA 1994) —Twitty's last recording, and a stone-cold soulful masterpiece.

8:03am

Doll By Doll “The Palace of Love”
from Revenge of Memory (Cooking Vinyl 2006) —Jackie Leven, the mastermind behind one of the greatest bands of the late 70s, and one I only discovered at last a few years ago.

8:11am

Jackie Leven and Michael Cosgrave “Beware Soul Brother”
from Wayside Shrines and the Code of the Travelling Man (Cooking Vinyl 2011) N  —Sad to say I wouldn't have known he put out a record just a few weeks ago if he hadn't passed away. Leven released so many records that few could come close to keeping up. This is a cool song, though.

8:18am

The Hollies “On a Carousel”
from 30th Anniversary Collection 1963-1993 (EMI 1993) —One of those songs I've heard a million times and had to have a friend tell me it has a cowbell. Thanks, Jim Varvaris.

8:20am

The Nice Boys “Teenage Nights”
from The Nice Boys (Birdman 2006) —Ted Ryan discovered these guys - a great power pop band (and cowbell user) I had never heard of.

8:24am

Beck “Mixed Bizness”
from Midnite Vultures (DGC 1999) —Anna Zachritz played this album yesterday at work, and there it is, the cowbell song I'd completely forgotten.

8:28am

John Doe “Little Tiger”
from Keeper (Yep Roc 2011) N  —A sweet little song from a man who knows when to hold back and when to let go.

8:33am

Fairport Convention “Bonny Bunch of Roses”
from Full House (A & M 1970) —Dave Swarbrick. 'Nuff said.

8:44am

The Velvet Underground “Pale Blue Eyes”
from The Velvet Underground (Verve www.vervemusicgroup.com 1969) —I still have days when this is my favorite record ever.

8:51am

R.E.M. “We All Go Back To Where We Belong”
from Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011 (Warner Bros. 2011) N  —One of the final R.E.M. songs thrown onto this career retrospective. Not timeless like some, but nice to hear, anyway.

8:55am

Loudon Wainwright III “Central Square Song”
from Album I (Rhino Atlantic 1970) —I can't even imagine hearing this record back when it came out, with no expectations of Wainwright's approach to music.

9:02am

Bush Tetras “Too Many Creeps”
from Boom In the Night (ROIR 1995) —Laura Kennedy, the bassist for the Bush Tetras, passed away a few days ago. I had few cassettes back in the day, so I played in the car the ones I had quite often. These guys were in heavy rotation for a couple years there.

9:06am

Paul Simon “Rewrite”
from So Beautiful or So What (Universal unk 2011) N  —One of many highlights from Simon's incredible concert the other night; here's my review of the show: http://blurt-online.com/news/view/5666/

9:10am

ZAPP “More Bounce to the Ounce”
from All the Greatest Hits (Warner Brothers 1993) —Come on, let's dance!

9:18am

Mayer Hawthorne “Get to Know You”
from How Do You Do (Universal Republic Records 2011) —I've read about him, but I didn't get to hear him until yesterday - this is some cool soul.

9:23am

Art Neville “Hook Line & Sinker”
from Brother to Brother (Fuel 2000 2003) —Though he was always overshadowed by his brother Aaron, I never get tired of hearing Art Neville sing.

9:25am

Nick Lowe “Shame On the Rain”
from The Old Magic (Yep Roc 2011) N  —Purty. Sad.

9:29am

Joe Henry “Unspeakable”
from Reverie (Anti www.anti.com 2011) N  —I have the hardest time describing Joe Henry's stuff, but I think it's amazing.

9:33am

Tift Merritt “I Live For You”
from Buckingham Solo (Fantasy 2009) —A gorgeous rendition of the George Harrison song.

9:36am

Bill Frisell “You've Got to Hide Your Love Away”
from All We Are Saying (Savoy 2011) N  —Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, and Jenny Scheinman make for a great frontline trio on this John Lennon tribute.

9:46am

Tom Waits “Last Leaf”
from Bad As Me (Anti- 2011) N  —Keith Richards sings backing vocals, and he & Marc Ribot play guitar together. Lovely.

9:49am

Bob Dylan “The Love That Faded”
from The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams (Columbia 2011) N  —Dylan does a great job finishing up this Hank Williams lyric.

9:51am

Kasey Chambers “Love Like a Hurricane”
from Little Bird (Liberation 2010) N  —A very nice duet with some guy named Kevin Bennett - I bet he's known in Australia.

9:55am

Rufus Wainwright “Who Are You New York?”
from All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu (Decca url 2010) —This song blows me away every time I hear it.
