Gregg Allman “Just Another Rider”
from Low Country Blues (Rounder www.rounder.com 2011) N —Most of the songs on this new record are classic blues numbers subjected to Allman's interpretation, but the dude wrote this one himself, a powerful r'n'b number.
k.d. lang & The Siss Boom Bang “Sugar Buzz”
from Sing It Loud (Nonesuch 2011) —As I've enjoyed pretty much every trip down whatever path lang has followed over the last 25 years, I'm confused by those who say this is a return to form. That said, it's possibly her best album.
Painkillers “The Oracle”
from Painkillers (Euclid 2011) N L —St. Louis band of the 80s finally gets its material issued on CD. And it has a cowbell on this song!
from Four (The Major Label 2010) —I've only just discovered this pop songwriter, but holy moley! He's got hooks, melodies, dynamics, and just about everything I want in a pop/rock record.
Richard X. Heyman “No Time To Rest On Sunday”
from Tiers (Turn Up 2011) N —Here's a name I hadn't heard in years - I remember he put out some pretty nice records in the late 80s, early 90s; now he turns up with a double album that's supposed to be fabulous. I like this song, anyway.
MC5 “Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)”
from Kick Out the Jams (Elektra 1969) —This song starts out with Brother Wayne Kramer, and it kicks major booty from there.
Meat Puppets “Incomplete”
from Lollipop (Megaforce 2011) N —As usual, Curt Kirkwood has some good songs on this new record - now how many people will hear them?
The Feelies “Time Is Right”
from Here Before (Bar/None 2011) N —How many other bands can go away for 20 years and come back sounding as fresh and lively as the day they left?
The Blind Eyes “Hermetically Sealed”
from With A Bang (self-released 2011) N L —Teaser track from the forthcoming new release of this St. Louis band. Gotta love a song with "ba-ba-ba-ba" background vocals.
