This show is entirely devoted to music of the Pontic Greeks, historically from the Black Sea coast of what is now Turkey, but diplaced to modern day Macedonian Greece in 1923

from Anthei kai ferei ki' allo (it blossoms and bears more) (Universal Music 2006) —this is a dhipat omal (slow dance in 9/8 divided 2+3+2+2).


Μπάμπης Κεμανετζίδης & Γιαννης Τσιτιριδης “Είχα Φτερά Κ' Επε΄Τανα”
from Μ' Έναν Λαλίαν Και Έναν Καρδίαν (Legend 2011) —This is a tík - a rhythm of alternating long and short beats, usually notated as 5/4 divided 3+2, as here, but traditionally less distinct


Pella Nikolaidou, Giorgos Poulantsaklis “'Ο χυρη μ' αρ'εφυεν (Αργο διπατ)”
from Εν πολυχορδον οργανον εκ Ποντοθ Κεμανεσ (Iris 2007) —This song is a slow dhipat (9/8 divided 2+3+2+2). Pella Nikolaïdou is the daughter of Stathis Nikolaïdis whose work will be heard later in the show

Giorgos Poulantzaklis “Tamsara”
from Eyneth (Vasipap/Thermaikos) —everyone in the general area of East Anatolia does a version of Tamzara, a line dance in 9/8 (divided 2+2+2+3); this is the Pontic version.


Mihalis Zerfeiridis, Panagiotis Kogalidis, & Adam Apostolidis, with Theodoros Kesidis “Tas”
from Pontiako Glendi Live (Cronos Music www.cronosmusic.gr) —Tas is a Pontic men's solo dance similar to dances of the Caucassus


Μιχάλης Καλιοντζίδης/Γεωργούλης Λαφαζανίδης “Εσύ Αμόν Εμέν (dhipat)”
from Τα Αυθεντικά Του Πόντου (Vasipap) —this is the traditional sound of the Pontos - a singer, a kemenche /Pontic lyra player, and spare (if any) percussion. The kemenche is a vertical fiddle found all over Anatolia and part of the Aegean, but is the traditional instrument, along with the tul


Μιχάλης Καλιοντζίδης/Γεωργούλης Λαφαζανίδης “Πυρρίχειος Χορός Σέρα”
from Τα Αυθεντικά Του Πόντου (Vasipap) —this is a Serra, a fast men's dance in 7/8, related to the Turkish Siksara


Giannis Tsanankalis, Athan Tsolerides “Kotsari”
from ta kalítera Pontiaka (Panivar 1996) —another dance done all over east Anatolia, under the same name


Mihalis Zerfeiridis, Panagiotis Kogalidis, & Adam Apostolidis “Dhiplon Omal”
from Pontiako Glendi Live (Cronos Music www.cronosmusic.gr) —dhiplon omal is in 9/8, but 2+2+2+3


Theodoros Pavlidis “Kortsopon Melahrino (tromahton)”
from ta Sevdalidika (Vasipap 1968) —tromahton is basically a fast tík in 7/8. It is done in lines.


Stathis Nikolaïdis, Giannis Tsanakalis “Potami pou trehei (tik)”
from ta kalítera Pontiaka (Panivar 1996) —this tík is made all the more dramatic by the use of synthesizer with the traditional kemenche


Michalis Kaliontzidis “Instrumental (Tik dhiplon, tromahton, kotsari)”
from Anthei kai ferei ki' allo (it blossoms and bears more) (Universal Music 2006) —this suite of dances compresses what would be a traditional dance set lasting 20-30 minutes down to 7 1/2. The fast 7/8 time center piece is also a Tík Tonya, according to folklorist Kyriakos Moïsidis.

Stavros Savvidis “Tík & Tromahton”
from 2007 sto Akritas pallas - live —This live set starts with a tík and then moves into the faster tromahton. The instrumentation imitates the sound of the Tulum (Black Sea bagpipe)
