Esther Phillips “Baby, I'm For Real”
from From A Whisper To A Scream (Kudu 1972) —Reissue of her 1972 King release. Sublime version of a song written by Marvin Gaye & Anna Gordy and arranged & conducted by Pee Wee Ellis.
Allen Toussaint “St. James Infirmary”
from The Bright Mississippi (Nonesuch 2009) —2009 instrumental version featuring Allen Toussaint (piano), Don Byron (clarinet), Nicholas Payton (trumpet), Marc Ribot (acoustic guitar), David Piltch (bass) & Jay Bellerose (drums). Produced by Joe Henry.
Otis Redding “Cigarettes and Coffee”
from Otis! The Definitive Otis Redding (Rhino 1993) —Recorded in 1966 and written by Eddie Thomas, Jay Walker & Jerry Butler. The vocals on this and the drums of Al Jackson, Jr. (less is more, in this case) are just incredible.

from The Bert Berns Story: Vol. 1 1960-64 (Ace 2008) —Written by Bert Berns & recorded for the Decca label in 1964. This was the original version of the song but Them (with Van Morrison) had a much bigger hit with it several months later.
Kirsty Maccoll “In These Shoes?”
from Tropical Brainstorm (V2 1999) —Written by Pete Glenister & Kirsty MacColl and found on her last album which was completed just months before her untimely death.
Los Lobos “On A Night Like This”
from Masked and Anonymous (Columbia 2003) —Written by Bob Dylan and found on the 2003 soundtrack to the Larry Charles film. Somehow, this movie failed to garner any Oscars (TM).
La Sera “Never Come Around”
from La Sera (Hardly Art 2011) —Really catchy pop song written & sung by Katy Goodman (who is also bassist for Vivian Girls) and found on this 2011 debut release.
The Remodels “Girl Don't Come”

Susan Cowsill “Sweet Bitter End”
from Lighthouse CD Album (Threadhead Records 2010) —Written by Susan Cowsill & Tad Armstrong (who also plays bass on most of this album). Susan Cowsill & The Russ Broussard Duo will be appearing at Off Broadway this Friday (7/15). This is an early seated show that begins at 7 PM. Highly recommended.

from Les Animaux Épouvantables (Tower Groove Records 2011) N L —Instrumental written by Larry Bulawsky. Magic City is having their LP release party a week from Saturday (7/23) at El Leñador located at 3124 Cherokee. Also on the bill are The Ransom Note and Warm Jets USA.
