Bobby "Blue" Bland “You've Got Bad Intentions”
from Anthology (MCA 2001) —Sheer perfection - the loping groove, the killer guitarist, the amazing vocals.
Alejandro Escovedo “Undesired”
from Street Songs of Love CD Album (Fantasy 2009) N —He'll be at LouFest a week from Sunday - I'm not very excited about the Fest as a whole, but Alejanro is always a major treat live (and you can catch the Carolina Chocolate Drops right before him).
The Call “Scene Beyond Dreams” (Mercury 1984) —Very sad to learn last night that Michael Been, lead singer and songwriter of this band, passed away. I had no idea he was the father of a guy in Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
Elvis Costello “Sunday's Best”
from Armed Forces (Rhino unk 1979) —One of the eeriest tracks of Costello's baroque pop era - Steve Nieve's organ makes like a merry-go-round spinning off its axis.
The Gap Band “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”
from Gold (Hip-O 2006) —Robert Wilson, the great bsssist for these funk heroes, passed away the other day at only age 53.
Little Feat “Fat Man In the Bathtub”
from Dixie Chicken (Warner 1973) —I was gonna play this song for the cowbell segment anyway, and then I found out drummer Richie Hayward passed away last week. The man propelled some hot grooves.
Spencer Davis Group “I'm a Man”
from Best of (EMI 1998) —Here's a classic cowbell cut with a very young Steve Winwood sounding spectacular.
Temptations “I Wish It Would Rain”
from Gold (Universal 2005) —No seriously, I wish it would rain. That's not a metaphor for me. I want rain.
Johnny Adams “A Losing Battle”
from I Won't Cry (Rounder 1991) —I guess Johnny doesn't care if it rains - his album is called I Won't Cry so he has nothing to hide.
Raul Malo “Living For Today”
from Sinners & Saints (Fantasy 2010) N —I'm not sure when this hits stores, but line up and get it when it does - it's the best Malo record in several years.
Brian Capps “Saturday Night Is New Year's Eve”
from Studio Project (none 2010) N —Brian Capps has recorded a terrific new record - now somebody needs to release it.
Max Roach “Driva' Man”
from We Insist! - Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite (Candid 1960) —Max Roach and his then-wife Abbey Lincoln teamed with Oscar Brown, Jr. to make this incredible Civil Rights plea. Lincoln passed away the other day, and I thought this was an essential part of her career.
Les Copeland “Long Lost Love”
from Don't Let the Devil In (Earwig 2010) N —Here's my review of this fantastic guitar player's record: http://blues.about.com/od/cddvdreview1/fr/Les-Copeland-Do-Not-Let-The-Devil-In-2010.htm
Van Morrison “This Weight”
from The Healing Game (Polydor 1997) —I read an interview with Greil Marcus in which he says this was the last great Van Morrison album, and I realized I'd never heard it. I'm very impressed with this song - gotta check out the rest.
