Big Mama Thornton “I Smell a Rat”
from Fine Gals, Fast Women and Wailin'Daddies: The First of Leiber & Stoller (El Toro Records 2004) —Written by Leiber & Stoller and recorded in 1953. In 1952, Johnny Otis introduced Leiber & Stoller to his new band vocalist, Big Mama Thornton. They went on to write songs such as this one, Nightmare & Hound Dog for her.

According to the liner notes, this song was originally conceived to be the follow-up to the Crystals' 'He's A Rebel' hit but it was rejected by Phil Spector.
