Fairport Convention “Fotheringay” from Best of the BBC Recordings (UMe 2007) —The live version at the BBC sounds almost exactly like the studio recording, but I like to think it's more impressive that they did that live on the radio.Buy it!
Jesse Winchester “Biloxi” from Jesse Winchester (Rhino 1970) —That first album by Mr. Winchester still stands as one of the all-time greatest singer/songwriter records. This song is so gorgeous.Buy it!
R.E.M. “Fall on Me” from Life's Rich Pageant (IRS) —Back when this radio station was new, I think I was excited to have the chance to share my love for this band, and this song in particular; I figured if people could hear the music I liked, it would become popular. In this band's case, that was true.Buy it!
Neil Young “Look Out For My Love” from Comes A Time (Reprise 1978) —I remember my dad telling me I was just listening to country music when I bought this album. Maybe not this song, but yeah, there is country on that record. At the time, that seemed confusing, but now it seems comforting.Buy it!
Maria Muldaur “Please Send Me Someone to Love” from Steady Love (stony plain 2011) N —My review of this very fine record is here: http://blues.about.com/od/cddvdreview1/fr/Maria-Muldaur-Steady-Love-2011.htmBuy it!
The Rockhouse Ramblers “If You Want Me To” from Lies and Damn Lies CD ALBUM (Rockhouse Ramblers 2010) L —Gary Hunt kicks some serious butt with this gem from the album they snuck out last year, several years after recording it.Buy it!
The Heartbreakers “Born To Lose” from D.I.Y. Blank Generation: the New York Scene (1975-1978) (Rhino 1993) —Junkie rock, but it definitely rocks.Buy it!
Chuck Berry “Reelin' and Rockin'” from Johnny B. Goode: His Complete 50s Chess Recordings (Hip-O 2007) —Yeah, that's a pretty good song.Buy it!
Susana Baca “Plena Y Bomba” from Afrodiaspora (Luaka Bop 2011) N —That's like the only song on the record that doesn't have a cowbell. Oh, I'm stupid. But the song is gorgeous. Oh, maybe there are a few clinks here and there.Buy it!
Patti Smith “Free Money” from Outside Society: Looking Back 1975-2007 (Arista 2011) N —Every night before I go to sleep, find a ticket, win the lottery, scoop the pearls out from the sea, cash them in buy you all the things you need.Buy it!
Sleepy Kitty “Ridin' With St. Louis” from Infinity City (Euclid Records www.euclidrecords.com/ 2011) N L —I always think of this cut as showing the White Stripes what they could have done better.Buy it!
Eilen Jewell “Bang Bang Bang” from Queen of the Minor Key (Signature Sounds Recording Company 2011) N —I should have gone to see Eileen Jewell when she was in town, but you just can't hit everything that happens around here.Buy it!
Emmylou Harris “Boy From Tupelo” from Red Dirt Girl (Elektra 2000) —As I was quite disappointed with this year's Emmylou Harris album, I revisted one of her older ones, and found this gem I'd almost forgotten.Buy it!
Hayes Carll “Girl Downtown” from Trouble In Mind (Lost Highway www.losthighwayrecords.com 2008) —Nothing wrong with the latest Hayes Carll, but I had a hankerin' for this one from his last record.Buy it!
Carl Mann “Mona Lisa” from Mona Lisa: the Very Best of Carl Mann (Collectables www.oldies.com 1999) —There was a time in my life when I actually knew the Nat King Cole version better, but damn! I was very young then.Buy it!
Lindsey Buckingham “Rock Away Blind” from Seeds We Sow (Buckingham 2011) N —Some more finger-picking - it would be nice to hear him bang out a chord once in a while. But this is purty, I admit.Buy it!
