Syl Johson “Sockin' Soul Power”
from Syl Johnson: Complete Mythology Single (The Numero Group 2010) N  —This episode of M2M will be made up of some of my favorite releases and/or songs of 2010. This 6-LP, 4-CD compilation was one of the finest reissues of 2010. - This '68 Chicago soul track was written by Syl Johnson.


Percy Sledge “A Sweet Woman Like You”
from Percy Sledge - The Atlantic Recordings (Rhino / Atlantic 2010) N  —Written by Joe Tex and recorded in 1966 in Sheffield, AL. Found on this excellent new 4-CD compilation of all of his Atlantic Records output. Also includes extensive liner notes by Barney Hoskyns.


Jr. Walker & The All Stars “Cool Cool Baby”
from A Cellarful of Motown! Vol. 4 (Universal 2010) —This 2010 release is the 4th installment of this series and contains two CDs of previously unissued Motown songs. This Jr. Walker rave-up was recorded in 1965.


Gil Scott-Heron “I'll Take Care of You”
from I'm New Here CD Album (XL 2010) —Excellent version of the Bobby Blue Bland song (actually written by Brook Benton) found on his February, 2010 recording. Features Gil Scott-Heron on piano along with a small string section.


Mose Allison “I'm Alright”
from The Way of the World (Anti- 2010) —Written by Loudon Wainwright III and produced by Joe Henry. This was his first studio recording since 1998.


Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan “Come Undone”
from Hawk (Vanguard www.vanguardrecords.com 2010) N  —Written by Isobel Campbell & featuring duet vocals by Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell. I really like the use of the strings and keyboards on this track. One of my top 10 releases of the year. Highly recommended.


The Rumblers “Angry Sea”
from It's A Gas! (Ace 2010) N  —Music bed. New compilation of the Southern California-based 60s garage band. This track was recorded for the Downey label in 1963.


Tom Jones “If I Give My Soul”
from Praise & Blame (Lost Highway 2010) N  —Written by Billy Joe Shaver & found on this powerful 2010 release made up of spiritual & gospel songs. Tom Jones kills on this track.


Patty Griffin “Never Grow Old”
from Downtown Church CD Album (CMG 2010) —Traditional gospel song featuring the vocals of Patty Griffin & Buddy Miller. From one of the most memorable albums and concerts of 2010.


Carolina Chocolate Drops “Hit 'em Up Style”
from Genuine Negro Jig (Nonesuch 2010) —A Blu Cantrell cover found on one of my Top 10 albums of the year. This might be my favorite single of the year, for that matter. Also, they put on a truly wonderful show at LouFest this year. Go see them if you ever have the chance.


Trombone Shorty “Hurricane Season”
from Backatown CD Album (Verve 2010) N  —OK, this instrumental ought to get people going. Written by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews.


Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings “She Ain't A Child No More”
from I Learned the Hard Way (Daptone 2010) —Written by Bosco Mann and found on one of my top 10 albums of the year. What sets them apart from some of the other new soul acts is they have the songs & put on an amazing live show. This album found them stretching out way more than past releases.


Solomon Burke “Everything About You”
from Nothing's Impossible (E1 Entertainment 2010) N  —RIP Solomon Burke & Willie Mitchell who both passed away in 2010. This track was written by Solomon Burke & this 2010 release was produced by Willie Mitchell.


Peter Wolf “It's Too Late For Me”
from Midnight Souvenirs (Verve 2010) —Another track from one of my top 10 albums of the year. Also featuring the vocals of Merle Haggard. Other guest vocalists on this release include Neko Case & Shelby Lynne.


Alejandro Escovedo “Anchor”
from Street Songs of Love CD Album (Fantasy unk 2009) —You guessed it -- another of my top 10 albums of the year. Co-written by Alejandro Escovedo & Chuck Prophet and produced by Tony Visconti. Based on the last two albums, I wouldn't be quick to change this set-up.


The Hotrats “Fight for Your Right”
from Turn Ons (G&D Records / Hostess 2009) —Sounds like a mash-up of Beastie Boys and The Who. A one-time album of all covers put out by Gaz Coombes & Danny Goffey from Supergrass.


The Like “Wishing He Was Dead”
from Release Me MP3/file Album (Geffen 2010) —Recorded at Dunham Studios in New York. Mainly produced by Mark Ronson.


Fabienne Delsol “Ce jour là”
from On My Mind (Damaged Goods 2010) N  —Written by Georges Aber (see Petula Clark credits) and fund on this 2010 release by the ex-bassist & lead vocalist of the Bristols. Her best release, yet.


The School “Let It Slip”
from Loveless Unbeliever (Elefant 2010) N  —Another one of my top 10 releases of 2010. Indie-pop out of Cardiff, Wales & featuring the vocals & songwriting of Liz Hunt.


Field Music “The Rest Is Noise”
from Field Music (Measure) (Memphis Industries 2010) N  —Yet another of my favorite albums of 2010. From a band based out of Sunderland, England.


Bettie Serveert “Souls Travel”
from Pharmacy of Love (Palomine 2010) —Co-written & sung by Carol van Dyk. The Amsterband-based band also put on a really fine show at Blueberry Hill earlier this year.


Dean & Britta “Herringbone Tweed”
from 13 Most Beautiful ... Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests (Double Feature 2010) N  —Music bed. Instrumental from this album of songs written to accompany 13 short films made by Andy Warhol.


Jakob Dylan “Holy Rollers For Love”
from Women + Country (Columbia 2010) —Written by Jakob Dylan and featuring harmony vocals by Neko Case & Kelly Hogan.


Dirty Projectors “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine”
from Levi's Pioneer Sessions 2010 Revival Recordings (www.levispioneersessions.com 2010) —Bob Dylan cover released in 2010.


Vetiver “I Used to Be a King”
from Be Yourself: A Tribute to Graham Nash’s Songs for Beginners (Grassroots Records 2010) N  —From this compilation of various artists performing songs from Graham Nash's "Songs For Beginners" album. For fans of CSNY, there is a band called Marrahesh Express playing all CSNY covers a week from Saturday (1/8) at the Old Rock House.


The Burns Unit “You Need Me to Need This”
from Side Show (Burns Unit 2010) N  —Written & sung by ex-Delgado Emma Pollock and found on this album from a collective of artists from Scotland and Canada.


Susan Cowsill “The Way That It Goes”
from Lighthouse CD Album (Threadhead Records 2010) —Beautiful vocal on this song written by Susan Cowsill & Russ Broussard.


Belle and Sebastian “I Didn't See It Coming”
from Write About Love (Matador 2010) N  —This is another album I had in my Top 10 releases of 2010. Written by Stuart Murdoch.


Magnolia Summer “The Current Moves”
from The Current Moves EP (Undertow 2010) L —Written & sung by Chris Grabau & found on one of two EPs the St. Louis band released in 2010.


The Broken Heartbreakers “Tell That Boy”
from Wintersun (self released 2010) N  —This album from the Auckland, New Zealand band is another of my top 10 releases of 2010. Featuring the vocal and songwriting talents of John Guy Howell & Rachel Bailey.


Best Coast “When I'm With You”
from Crazy for You CD Album (Mexican Summer www.mexicansummer.com 2010) —From this indie-pop release featuring Bethany Cosentino & Bobb Bruno. Sorry I missed their show which took place earlier this year.


The Greenhornes “Better Off Without It”
from **** (Third Man www.thirdmanrecords.com 2010) N  —After something like a five-year hiatus, the Cincinnati band finally put out a new release in 2010.


Bruce Springsteen “The Promise” (Columbia 2010) N  —The title track to this two-CD release featuring previously unreleased songs from 1977/78 during sessions when he was recording his "Darkness On The Edge of Town" album.


Elton John and Leon Russell “Gone To Shiloh”
from The Union (Decca 2010) N  —This track was written by Elton John & Bernie Taupin and features the vocals of Elton John, Leon Russell and Neil Young.


Johnny Cash “Aloha Oe”
from American VI: Ain't No Grave (American 2010) —Previously unreleased recordings released in 2010. A really affecting vocal on this by the late, great Johnny Cash.


Bettye LaVette “Salt of the Earth”
from Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook CD Album (Anti 2010) —Powerful interpretation of the Rolling Stones' song with additional lyrics added to really drive it home.


Bob Dylan “I'll Keep It With Mine”
from The Witmark Demos: 1962-64 (Columbia 2010) N  —Previously unreleased demos recorded between 1962-64 for Dylan's publishing company.


Shelby Lynne “Alibi”
from Tears, Lies, and Alibis (Everso 2010) N  —From one of her two 2010 releases - the other being a Christmas album which is also recommended.


Devon Sproule “Don't Hurry for Heaven” (Black Hen 2010) —One of my favorite songs of 2010.


The Duke And The King “Shaky”
from Long Live the Duke and the King (Silva Screen 2010) —Alright, this song has convinced me I have to seek out their new release. What can I say? Things slip by me.


Los Lobos “Burn It Down”
from Tin Can Trust CD Album (Shout! Factory 2010) N  —Written by David Hidalgo & Louie Perez and found on their 2010 release.
