Galactic “Hey Na Na”
from Carnivale Electricos (Anti- 2012) N —This album celebrating a completely wacked out Carnivale spirit will be released, appropriately enough, on Mardi Gras, which is just four days away.
The Who “It's Not Enough”
from Endless Wire (Universal 2006) —Now that almost six years have passed since this came out, it's possible to judge this record not as the disappointing Who album it seemed, and more as a collection of pretty darn good Pete Townshend songs with Roger Daltrey singing. I love this song,
Joe Henry “The World & All I Know”
from Reverie (Anti 2011) N —Man, do I know how to pump people up with a set of gloomy songs or what?
Joe Louis Walker “Too Drunk To Drive Drunk”
from Hellfire (Alligator 2012) N —Now that he's got an album out on Alligator, maybe more people will recognize this guy as one of the best blues artists in the biz.
Otis Taylor “The Devil's Gonna Lie”
from Contraband (Telarc 2012) N —As expected, Otis Taylor only uses blues as a starting point. Very intense groove here.
Meshell Ndegeocello “Crazy and Wild”
from Weather (Naive 2014 2011) N —Another male-female moody duet, but my copy of this disc doesn't give credits, so I don't know who that guy is singing with her.
Leonard Cohen “Crazy to Love You”
from Old Ideas (Columbia 2012) N —I still need to sit down and really listen to this record, but I'm loving it so far.
The Bees “Change Can Happen”
from Every Step's a Yes (ATO 2011) N —These guys listen to 60s music, that's obvious, but they aren't as completely retro-minded as the Explorers Club.
The Retros “Inner City Rockers” (BDR 2011) N L —Happy birthday to drummer Steve Fairchild, who, I hope, has gotten to hear his music on the radio 33 years after it was recorded.
Tommy McLain “Sweet Dreams” (Edsel 1999) —A gorgeous cover of the Patsy Cline hit, with some Cajun country soul added.
