Orange Juice “Felicity”
from Coals to Newcastle (Domino 2010) N —Oh, I wish I had money enough and time to absorb a box set like this one, containing everything Orange Juice ever recorded. This song is Morrissey's favorite OJ song - that's what it says on the sampler here at the station.
The Oyster Band “Heaven to Calcutta”
from Ride (Cooking Vinyl 1989) —One of my fave bands of the late 80s, early 90s, and they used a cowbell quite well here.
Cheap Trick “Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School”
from Cheap Trick (EPIC/LEGACY 1977) —Bun E. Carlos rarely resorted to cowbell, but there's one on this track.
Laura Nyro & LaBelle “The Monkey Time / Dancing in the Street”
from Gonna Take A Miracle (Columbia 1971) —Check out this nice little piece on Laura Nyro at the essential Boogie Woogie Flu blog: http://boogiewoogieflu.blogspot.com/2010/12/jewish-soul-sister.html
Lester Bowie “The Great Pretender” (ECM 1981) —One of the most amazing recorded pieces I know.
The Feelies “The Good Earth” (Twin/Tone 1986) —I've been struck recently, as I have been several many times in my life, by the genius of this band.
Tim Lee 3 “Bigger”
from Raucous (Cool Dog Sound 2010) N —Tim and his wife Susan have come up with 2 discs full of new material - this is a darn good band.
Buddy Guy “Stay Around a Little Longer”
from Living Proof (Silvertone/Jive Records 2010) N —The other day, there was this horrible news report on one wretched website claiming B.B. King had died. But, as he sings with Mr. Guy here, he's gonna stay around a little longer.
Like everything else, times are approximate.
