The Belle Brigade “Shirt”
from The Belle Brigade (Reprise 2011) N —Thanks to Spencer Marquart for introducing me to this extremely cool brother & sister pair with more than a small nod to 70s Fleetwood Mac.
Chris Isaak “Crying Waiting Hoping”
from Listen To Me: Buddy Holly (Verve Forecast 2011) N —You can take the majority of "interpretations" of Buddy Holly classics on the 2 new tributes to appear this year & chuck them in the river, but Chris Isaak absolutely nails this one!
Matthew Sweet “When Love Lets Go I'm Falling”
from Modern Art (Missing Piece 2011) N —Strange to release a brand new album but tour behind a 21-year-old clasic. He'll be here playing Girlfriend on Oct. 15.
Wilco “Open Mind”
from The Whole Love (Nonesuch 2011) N —I'm a gonna see Wilco and Nick Lowe on Tuesday at the Peabody Opera House. Should be very cool.
The Undertones “Teenage Kicks”
from The Undertones (sire 1979) —One of the greatest songs in the world - after 32 years, I still get pumped up every time I hear it.
Bill Frisell “Across the Universe”
from All We Are Saying (Savoy 2011) N —OMG! This is so luxuriously beautiful. Frisell, Greg Leisz on pedal steel, and Jenny Scheinman on violin completely own one of my all-time fave songs.
Ellis Paul “The Dragonfly Races” (Black Wolf 2007) —He'll be at Off Broadway tomorrow night, Oct. 1.
Johnnie & Jack “Ashes of Love”
from ??? (???) —Johnnie Wright, who co-wrote this classic & was married to Kitty Wells, passed away a few days ago.
The Ethiopians “Reggae Hit the Town” (Sanctuary 2001) —Dillon went on to record great reggae at least through the 80s, but I immediately went back to those glorious ska/rock steady cuts from the early days.
Funkadelic “Cosmic Slop” (westbound 1973) —All the ingredients of a masterpiece right here.
The Gourds “Drop What I'm Doing”
from Old Mad Joy (Vanguard 2011) N —I think I've actually randomly picked the same song from this new Gourds record both times that I've reached for it. At least it's a really cool song.
Like everything else, times are approximate.
