Dave Alvin “What's Up With Your Brother”
from Eleven Eleven (Yep Roc 2011) —It's hard being so talented and having a brother who's just as talented in a different way.
The Kinks “Long Tall Sally”
from The Kinks (Castle 1964) —Such a charming little version of Little Richard's song.
The Feelies “Raised Eyebrows”
from Crazy Rhythms (A&M 1980) —This is one of the craziest of rhythms - just try to dance to what thie drums are doing.
Chuck Prophet “White Night, Big City”
from Temple Beautiful (Yep Roc 2012) N —So many things to love about this song (and this album). But I'm particularly enamored of the Television styled background vocals here.
Dr. John “My Children, My Angels”
from Locked Down (Nonesuch www.nonesuch.com 2012) N —It never occurred to me that Dan Auerbach could actually turn out to have talent, but his guitar playing works just fine on this excellent new record from the great Doctor!
Brothers Lazaroff “She Loves to Dance”
from Science Won (self-released 2012) N L —CD release parties 4-20 at the Gramophone, 4-21 at Focal Point, and 4-22 at Lola (with JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound at 11 am for that last one).
Sam Roberts “An American Draft Dodger in Thunder Bay”
from Chemical City (Universal 2006) —Canadian rocker with really good songs and a big sound - of course it didn't sell.
The Teardrop Explodes “Passionate Friend”
from Wilder (Mercury 1981) —English rock band with really good songs and a big sound - it didn't sell that much, either, but at least there's a cult.
Teddy Thompson “Shine So Bright”
from Separate Ways (Verve Forecast 2006) —Son of the world's greatest guitarist with really good songs and all kinds of sounds - it doesn't sell, but at least so far he keeps getting chances to make records.
Like everything else, times are approximate.
