The Zombies “Imagine the Swan” from Odessey And Oracle (Remastered Edition) (Rhino 1968) —Another masterpiece from 1968 - I somehow never connected these two songs with the same time-frame before.Buy it!
Lou Christie “Summer Snow” from EnLIGHTNIN'ment The Best of Lou Christie (Rhino 1990) —I wouldn't be surprised if we get snow this summer - I wouldn't be surprised at anything any more about the weather.Buy it!
Ike Reilly “Morning Glory” from Hard Luck Stories (Rock Ridge 2009) —Ike Reilly churned out some awfully good records these past few years, somehow turning into one of my favorite contemporary musicians.Buy it!
Punch Brothers “Patchwork Girlfriend” from Who's Feeling Young Now? (Nonesuch 2012) —Just check out the way all the instruments weave their own parts into this push/pull effect that knocks me out every time.Buy it!
Radiohead “Airbag” from OK Computer (Capitol Records 1997) —While I don't think they ever hit these heights again, I still love OK Computer whenever I hear something from it. And a major influence, I believe, on Punch Brothers.Buy it!
Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker & Yim Yames “Angel's Blues” from New Multitudes (Rounder www.rounder.com 2012) N —Will Johnson sings, and Anders Parker plays the heck out of the guitar on this one.Buy it!
The Easybeats “Helow How Are You” from The Very Best From Down Under (Music Products 1995) —Not one of their most famous songs, but a quite lovely one that reminds us that they probably admired the Bee Gees quite a bit.Buy it!
Rufus Wainwright “Perfect Man” from Out of the Game (Decca 2012) N —Rufus has done many things in his spectacular career, but this song makes me want to dance, and that's not something he's done before.Buy it!
Norah Jones “She's 22” from Little Broken Hearts (Blue Note url 2012) N —I think Norah Jones is moving completely away from the jazz world; she can sing anything she wants as far as I'm concerned.Buy it!
Hank Crawford w/James Moody “Boo's Tune” from Heart and Soul: the Hank Crawford Anthology (Rhino 1994) —As Crawford stepped outside the Ray Charles band, he got together with James Moody, who composed this catchy number, and they made a heck of a fine team.Buy it!
The Lafayette Afro Rock Band “Hihache” from Darkest Light: The Best of the Lafayette Afro Rock Band (Strut 1999) —That drum intro was sampled on a number of hip-hop records, but it also grounds one heck of a tasty slab of funk here.Buy it!
Shelby Lynne “I Want to Go Back” from Revelation Road (Everso Records 2011) N —She's gonna play for free at Pridefest this June. Very excited to be able to walk six blocks and see Shelby Lynne.Buy it!
Bettye Lavette “The High Road” from I've Got My Own Hell to Raise (Anti www.anti.com 2005) —I haven't thrown this record on in a long time, but this song popped up on itunes the other day, and damned if it didn't feel as thrilling as it first did 7 years ago.Buy it!
