Lil Greenwood “I'm Crying”
from The Oxford American Southern Music CD # 12 (Oxford American 2010) N —1953 song written by Lil Greenwood & released on the Federal label. The blues & gospel singer was from Alabama & is included on this CD which accompanies the latest issue of Oxford American magazine.
Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup “That's All Right”
from When the Sun Goes Down: The Secret History of Rock & Roll (RCA Bluebird/BMG Heritage 2002) —Written by Arthur Crudup & recorded in Chicago in 1946. Elvis Presley went on to record this in 1954. Found on this excellent 4-CD compilation of blues songs which became the precursor for rock & roll.
Jeanne & The Darlings “Soul Girl”
from Stax-Volt: The Complete Singles (1959-1968) (Atlantic unk 1991) —Written by Isaac Hayes & David Porter and recorded in 1967 for Stax/Volt. Jeanne & The Darlings were from Little Rock & had never sung secular songs until they hooked up at Stax with Isaac Hayes & David Porter.
Carla Thomas “I Like What You're Doing (To Me)”
from Stax Profiles: Carla Thomas (stax 2006) —Written by Bettye Crutcher, Homer Banks & Raymond Jackson and recorded for Stax in 1968. If you're looking for a good introduction to Carla Thomas, this compilation isn't a bad place to start. None of her sublime Christmas songs are included, however. Hey
Isaac Hayes “I Stand Accused”
from The Isaac Hayes Movement (Enterprise url 1970) —I don't think that Isaac Hayes ever did anything that surpassed this. Written by Jerry & (his younger brother) Billy Butler and recorded for Stax in 1970. Plus some really fine guitar by Michael Toles. The guitar fills add so much.
Abigail Washburn “Last Train”
from City of Refuge (Rounder www.rounder.com 2011) N —Written by Abigail Washburn & Kai Welch. I agree with Roy Kasten (Feel Like Going Home) when he says that this is the first great release of 2011. Really interesting arrangements add a whole lot to this collection of well-written songs.
Dean & Britta “Silver Factory Theme”
from 13 Most Beautiful ... Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests (Double Feature 2010) N —Music bed. Instrumental included on this album of songs written to accompany 13 short B&W Andy Warhol silent films made from 1964-1966.
