Ernie K-Doe “A Certain Girl”
from Crescent City Soul: The Sound of New Orleans 1947-1074 (CAPITOL 1996) —Written by Naomi Neville (aka Allen Toussaint) and recorded in 1961. Found on this amazing 4-CD, 119-song box set of New Orleans music.
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears “Booty City”
from Scandalous (Lost Highway 2011) N —This song was one of the highlights from their show I saw at SXSW last week. Truth be told, though, the show really took off after they brought out the Relatives -- a soul gospel band with four amazing vocalists.
Mulatu Astatke “Yègellé Tezeta (My Own Memory)”
from Éthiopiques, Vol. 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale (1969-1974) (Buda Musique 2004) —Ethiopian jazz instrumental written by Mulatu Astatke & recorded in 1969.
Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels “Baby Jane (Mo-Mo Jane)”
from Rev-Up: The Best of Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels (Rhino 1990) —Mitch Ryder original that was originally released as the b-side on the 1965 "Jenny Take a Ride" single.
Yo La Tengo “Fourth Time Around”
from I'm Not There (Music from the Motion Picture) (Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrack 2007) —Beautifully sung by Georgia Hubley and found on this 2-CD collection of various artists' versions of Dylan songs recorded for the 2007 Todd Haynes movie. This was one of the highlights of Yo La Tengo's last concert here at The Pageant.
Dottie Peoples “I Believe in You”
from Gotta Serve Somebody - The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan (Columbia 2003) —Sublime gospel vocals on this 2003 Dylan cover.
The Baseball Project “1976”
from Vol. 2 - High and Inside (Bonus Version) (Yep Roc Records www.yeproc.com 2011) N —The Baseball Project put on a really fun show at last week's Thursday KDHX/Twangfest Day Party at SXSW. This ode to Mark "The Bird" Fidrych was written by Steve Wynn and Peter Buck.
Dean & Britta “Silver Factory Theme”
from 13 Most Beautiful: Songs For Andy Warhol's Screen Tests (Double Feature Records 2010) —Music bed. 2010 instrumental written to accompany one of Andy Warhol's short films.
Raul Malo “'Til I Gain Control Again”
from Sinners & Saints (Fantasy www.concordmusicgroup.com/labels/fantasy 2010) —One of Rodney Crowell's finest songs sung by one of our finest singers. Predictably outstanding. Appearing this Tuesday (3/29) at the Blueberry Hill Duck Room. Marshall McLean is opening.
Dolly Parton “Down From Dover”
from The Fairest of Them All / My Favorite Songwriter, Porter Wagoner (Omni 2010) —Moving narrative written by Dolly Parton and recorded in the period of 1968-69.
