Sugarman 3 “Dirty Water”
from What the World Needs Now (Daptone 2012) N —This new release would serve nicely as the soundtrack to your next party. This funkafied version of the Standells song is just one of many gems on this soul-funk instrumental (save for some tasteful Dapettes background vocals) album.
Gladys Knight & The Pips “It Should Have Been Me”
from Gladys Knight & The Pips Anthology (Motown 1995) —1968 song originally done by Kim Weston written by William "Mickey" Stevenson, Barrett Strong & Norman Whitfield and featuring one of her greatest vocals which is saying a lot given the number of amazing performances she has recorded.
The Bee Gees “Lonely Days”
from 2 Years On (Polydor 1971) —Written & sung by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. From Wikipedia - In many interviews, the Bee Gees have said that they recorded this song & "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" in the same night that they reunited. - A fairly successful night, I'd say
Little Richard with Fishbone “Rock Island Line”
from Folkways: A Vision Shared - A Tribute to Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly (Columbia www.columbiarecords.com 1988) —Piano & organ-driven version of the Leadbelly song found on this really strong 1988 compilation of various artists performing songs by Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly.
The "5" Royales “It Hurts Inside”
from King New Breed R&B - Vol. 2 (Kent 2012) N —B-side of a 1959 single written by Ralph Bass & Columbus Perry and found on this new collection of R&B dance tracks that came out on the King label. Most of their material was written by Lowman Pauling but not this particular track.
Shorty Long “Night Fo' Last (Instrumental)”
from Here Comes Shorty Long: The Complete Motown Stereo Masters (Kent 2012) —Music bed. 1967 instrumental written by Shorty Long & Clarence Paul.
Julia Stone “It's All Okay”
from By the Horns (Nettwerk unk 2012) N —From the Australian singer/songwriter's forthcoming 5/29 release. But why wait until then to hear it? You can stream it in its entirety at http://kdhx.org/music/music-news/hear-and-now-stream-the-new-album-by-the-horns-by-julia-stone
The Belle Brigade “No Time to Think”
from Chimes of Freedom - The Songs of Bob Dylan (Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International) (UMGI - Fontana International 2012) N —Not-often covered Bob Dylan song that was on his Street Legal album. The harmonies on this are beautiful.
